At this time we could nuke Twitter and Facebook off the map, destroy all the code, etc, and instead of "nothing of value was lost" we'd actually GAIN as a species...

They used to say "Take us to your leader", Then they translated a George Carlin bit and found out that our leaders are all assholes, so now they go directly to the anal probes.  They haven't figured out human metaphors.

I....was it REALLY 15 books ago? I read a lot (120 hours a month)...recently read a quite delightful book tiled "Space Opera".

Shortly, the Earth gets invaded by 8 foot tall neon blue space flamingos...but that's not the problem. Humanity has to participate in a battle of the bands for its very survival. You're probably thinking, "GREAT, get Beyoncé up there and we're saved". Well...the aliens like Bjork (who lost her voice due to an incident with a narwhal) and Yoko Ono (who is dead in the book, but is very much alive currently).

I remember when my university first got Facebook back in the 00s and you could only sign up if you had a .edu email address and then you could only be friends with people at your own school. The professors encouraged us to sign up so we could "help each other study." We used it to plan parties and get laid instead. Then they dropped the .edu requirement and it filled up with boomers and other reprobates and now it's just full of derp. fark Facebook, I hope it dies a horrible death

Modifying the share button so that after some content has been shared twice the third person in the chain must take the time to copy and paste the content into a new post, is fascism. Or nazi-something? I'm really not sure what the party line is there. Anti-freedum? Big trux?

It can't just about making money for facebook. You'd make more advertising dollars if people had to be more plugged in to share and if it wasn't bots doing the sharing because they'd get slowed down.
There's an ideology there. Allowing bots in the first place is counter-neutral.
How does facebook, if they do, make money off bots?

Wouldn't user verification reduce toxicity and make more money for them? Wouldn't verifying that you're a human before blasting your screed to millions of people reduce the rape threats and death threats and general nastiness and have the bonus of your advertisers knowing they're reaching actual people.

Maybe it's all just ripping off advertisers (lookit how much people we reached...no, uh, they're not bots, why?)

I just don't get how people can take money to destroy the fabric of their own social environment. Destroying democracy has to be at least in part by design.
Big government boots need to be stomping facebook's ass into a mudhole until they give up their data and algorithms because this is corrosive to democracy.

The article says that posts disputing the atrocity are being shared more than ones that don't dispute it.

I'm starting to think that sort of thing should be expected. I think people probably would not share true news about the atrocity, because it's in the mainstream media and anyone who wants to know about this doesn't need to hear it from me. Meanwhile the botnet that amplifies untrue stories is not only sharing them with each other, but the windowlickers who believe that nonsense turn around and reshare it because they want to argue against the mainstream take.

back in '01 when the taliban was having war declared on them, i remember a press conference their leader had when they said that any country that helped America would be on the taliban's shiatlist, and a kiwi reporter said "Would that include NZ" and the guy was like "Where's that?" and NZ was like "hell yeah"

It amazes me how many people were still so close to these people. I've had to drop, like, 4 people over the past 2 years. Because I had already long jettisoned the trash. Including my family.

I think this is another straight-versus-queer thing, though. Queers tend not to be friends with a lot of conservatives, including relatives. We can't tolerate their presence the way straight people can.

I mean, I'd jettisoned the bulk of them a long time ago. It's not like they were close. Just close *enough* that if say, my mom commented on one of their threads, it would still come across my feed, because all of them suck at privacy settings and make their posts public.

And? And what? This is the nature of the beast. It is as newsworthy as elementary math. Social media as it exists today cannot fix this problem for the simple reason that lies go around the world before the truth gets its running shoes on, and unless people stop being people, this will always be true.

People have been biatching about the cranks, weirdos, and bullshiatters that have found their way to mass media for as long as there has been mass media. In the fifties people complained about the stupidity and lies in TV programs. In the thirties people complained about radio programs. In the 1890s people complained about yellow journalism. There's nothing to do but learn to live in the world with this media and be a thoughtful consumer, and hope that the marketplace of ideas eventually chooses wisely.

You got any examples of this stuff? The closest one I can maybe give you credit for off hand is the Yellow Journalism thing... but that actually ended... with a bang. None of those examples were socially-engineered entities leveraging proven psychological/behavioral methodologies and machine learning to hyper target and engage users.

It's like nuking a country and saying, "Hey, cavemen threw burning spears and everyone hated that. We just need to learn to live with getting nuked."

Back to the Yellow Journalism thing: Something massive is going to have to happen to stick a fork in the whole do what thou wilt era of social media. It's probably already begun. And it's going to be a much bigger bang this time.
