He's probably been the best Philly-area (need that last part, else the "Villanova isn't in Philadelphia!" idiots chime in) coach in the past, oh, 30+ years. Certainly the most successful. And 1000x better than Steve "The NIT is okay by me!" Lappas. Also, by most accounts, one of the classiest guys you'll ever meet.

Enjoy your retirement, coach.

Well this will certainly make it easy to go back to hating Villanova again.

I always liked Coach Wright. He was a Big East coach that just looked and acted like he would have fit in with all the classic Big East coaches of my childhood. Like, you can picture him coaching 'Nova against Lou Carnesecca's St. John's teams.

Two rings in 21 ain't bad, and I've never heard too many rumblings (every coach has some...)

Congrats, Coach.

Gotta say, this surprised me.

Perhaps it was the Wright time to do so.

We should have seen this coming when he stopped wearing suits.

Wow.

This is really surprising. I have to wonder if there's some major issue coming down the pike at Villanova. He's still a relatively young guy at the top of his profession. Three Final Fours, and two titles in six years is pretty damn awesome. And one of those years was 2020 so we'll never know if he could have padded that resume.

I also wonder if he got sick & damn tired of the transfer portal, and simply decided he was too old for this shiat. He may have been young by coaching standards, but old enough to know he didn't want to deal with this another 5-10 years.

Great run though, Coach. Enjoy retirement.

For crimes against wordplay, we're sending you to Jay'll.

He always looked to me like he walked right out of The Sting.

That's not fair to Lappas. He actually made it to more NCAAs (4) than NITS (3). Of course, he also lost to OLD-DO-MIN-ION (clap, clap, clapclapclap) and never made it out of the first weekend of any tourney after '94....

\his teams are why I hate the VileCats, as he was coach when I was at PC
\\yes, OLD-DO-MIN-ION was a cheer in '96
\\\almost passed out screaming during the '96 home game

Okay, that's fair. I readily admit not really paying much attention to Nova until the late 90s, by which point, they weren't exactly lighting the world on fire.

Fordham's Kyle Neptune, who spent 10 years under Wright as a video coordinator and an assistant coach, will take over as Villanova coach.

Compared to Wright's teams, these teams are going to play like Uranus.

Arguably, Wright is the very best of the bunch. Contenders for that honor would be Thompson, Boeheim and Calhoun, but I would stack up Wright's career success against any of them. Maybe Calhoun is on top because of the way he brought up a program from nowhere.
