Eastwood's deconstruction of westerns with Unforgiven was great, but #1 should still belong to The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

Sometimes you just want to see good guys and bad guys. And ugly guys.

list fails with Power of the Dog.  What a snooze fest.

Bonus fails for every John Wayne movie on the list.

I would have put "Paint Your Wagon" in the list.

It's got everything. Shenanigans, bigamy, drunk Lee Marvin, French tarts, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, introducing young men to the best things in life...

If we're doing music videos, Lindsey Stirling's Steampunk fiddle-gunfight is a classic Western.

I humbly suggest this one be added.
It's more of a swan-song to the dying western genre but it's one of my faves.

Might be fair to call it a tie between the two. One is the pure 100% classic Western the other has the advantage of perspective and advances in the style of movie making, but both are incredible.

Il grande silenzio

The Great Silence (Il grande silenzio 1968) Nasty Roast Chicken'n'Spuds Fiasco

Note that you need to make sure to watch the non-stupid version. Back then movies had a fake ending for the American audience, and usually its made extra stupid to mock the audience.

An example of this is, from an American movie, Bladerunner. Bladerunner ends with the girl not having a 5 year life span anyways (no explanation), and them driving out in the lush nature (there's no lush nature in the Bladerunner universe, the audience is being mocked). The real ending, the editors cut, obviously doesn't have this ending.

But well, back then, the European movies had two endings. The real one, and the fake dumb one for the American audicence.

The list isn't completely horrible but fails without Tombstone

Also sorely missing The Quick and the Dead

Django Unchained,
while not strictly a western is far better than Hateful Eight(it's still more western than a couple on the list)

List is incomplete without For A Few Dollars More, arguably the best of the Spaghetti Wester(n) trilogy.  And when I say arguably, I mean you can argue with me, but you'd be wrong.  It's a better story with better production values than A Fistful of Dollars and tighter and far less overblown than the high budget The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

Absent:

El Dorado
Tombstone
Open Range

While not quite a western since it is set in Australia, I think Quigley Down Under has all the typical features of a good western.

The list has some great movies on it, and some stupid choices, but mostly it fails just because of WHY some of them are on there 'the plot is spotty and doesn't hold up well, but what a cast/soundtrack/scenery' ?

For the record, Winchester 73 is my fave western, with Unforgiven, Open Range, Silverado, and Stagecoach way up there.

I love the Seven Samurai - it is not a western. Yojimbo is also not a western, even though A Fistful of Dollars is.

The Seven Samurai is easily one of the 10 best films ever made, but to put it in the western category is just silly, even if kurosawa was influenced by the Western genre when he made it.

Young Guns.  Probably not a very good movie, but I was a teenager when it came out, so it's got outsized influence.

Dances with Wolves seems to have fallen out of the collective consciousness, though it was certainly highly acclaimed in its day.

Is El Mariachi a western?

Brokeback Mountain?

One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest?
