When a coach coaches his own relative, it's a disgrace for everyone involved including the school.  I base this mostly on that fat sack of crap Bobby Knight and his talentless twat of a son, Pat.  The kid should use his talent, go his own way, and not ride daddy's coattails.  In Pat Knight's, and apparently Michael Savarino's, case their talent would not have lead them to a university but rather twirling a large sign outside a mattress store for a living. At least they could have held their head high.

Well put. The kid is only a Dook because of grandpa. I'm sure a D2 team will pick him up.

I wonder if UNC or Wake have a scholarship they'd want to waste on him to sit on the bench the entire season.

Buddy Boeheim would like a word.

Syracuse Orange guard Buddy Boeheim capped a strong individual season by being named All-ACC first team on Monday morning. This comes two days after Buddy scored 30 points to win the ACC scoring title with 599 points (19.3 per game) to edge out Alondes Williams from Wake Forest. Mar 7, 2022

Your point about Bobby Knight's son is spot on, though.

My sister knew Bobby Knight's son and said he was pompous, arrogant, and a real jerk. She was his elementary school teacher

Agreed. Press Maravich playing his son Pete was a travesty and unfair to the other LSU players.

I generally agree, though at this point I think I would ride the pine for one more year and collect my degree from Duke as opposed to whatever D2 school would take me.  I know, "Duke sucks", but academically they are pretty highly ranked.

Though if he just wants to get out of the Coach K shadow, I respect that as well.  They should have had him try to earn a spot somewhere else to begin with.

OK great, you found an example where nepotism was justified. Now find another dozen examples just like that.

"Savarino, who leaves the Blue Devils as a graduate transfer"

I think he just wants to play basketball somewhere. He never got to play at Duke, anyway.

Ahh my bad.  I barely scanned the article and glossed over that.  Oh well, good for him.

Creighton 52-22 Greg McDermott/Doug McDermott
Davidson 77-42 Bob McKillop/Matt McKillop
Valparaiso 88-36 Homer Drew/Bryce Drew
Kansas 52-8 Phog Allen/Milton Allen & Kansas 44-19 Phog Allen/Bobby Allen
Marquette 78-9 Al McGuire/Allie McGuire

There's plenty more, not to mention sons of assistant coaches (Ed & Danny Manning - KU; Michael Porter Sr./Jr. - Mizzou) but you can look them up...I don't shine shoes anymore.

Or maybe he knows Scheyer is going to pull his scholarship and replace him with someone who actually has the talent to play at that level.

Think about how good Maravich would have been if he'd played under a different coach!

In all seriousness, the father coaches his kid for the first 18 years.  The kid would likely be able to grow more under a different coach with different methods.
