Conservative voters and the corporations who fund the conservatives are entirely interested in short-term profits and entirely disinterested in avoiding long-term problems. The lead industry spent years lying and having politicians in its pocket kill research into the dangers of lead until the evidence became overwhelming.

Where I live in Australia we've got a federal election campaign on now, and the scampering by conservatives to protect our thermal coal export industry (which employs fewer people now than in many, many decades due to automation and shrinkage) screaming about jobs is, well, I was going to say extraordinary but actually it's very predictable. We're exporting climate change for short term profit before the market vanishes (either due to our export markets going renewable, or the collapse of the human population due to climate change, whichever comes first). Thanks conservatives!

Conservatism should be declared the mental illness it is and that mental illness should ban a conservative from holding any office, including dog catcher.

This is not difficult.  The GOP results in weak environmental regulations.  Because profit before all else.

Voters who vote GOP are voting for weak environmental regulations.

There is really no disputing this.

So let's leave some blue up above us
Let's leave some green on the ground
It's only ours to borrow
Let's save some for tomorrow
Leave it and pass it on down

I'd argue a little later. Leaded paint was banned in 1978, so most houses had leftover paint cans for touch up sitting around. Leaded gas wasn't banned until 1996. It was 1991 before leaded ammo was banned in the US, and the ban has since been lifted because we keep electing people who don't value the world. I'd say GenX got it almost as bad as the boomers during the years where it really causes the damage.

Republicans hadn't gone full dumbass at that point. It took Reagan bringing the evangelicals into the Republican party for that to happen.

Which is why I have no problem when places like Texas and Florida get hit with environmental disasters. The people voted to ignore the environment, so they get what they deserve.

Yeah but lead bans were starting to become nationally popular, although that does explain the "centrist" tendency of gen xers.

Aren't there still a lot of lead pipes in our older water infrastructure, or in older homes? I understand there's mitigation methods available that prevents it from leaching lead into the actual water supply, but that requires maintenance.

And the predictable failure of the silent gen and boomers to rapidly contain and decontaminate environmental lead means that millennials also got a hearty dose in areas that have historically high levels of environmental lead.

Lead consumption is waaaaay down from 20-30 years ago. There's a correlation with a drop in altzheimers and dementia. Too late for most of Congress, but when GenX takes over, it'll still be too late to fix the planet for human life.
