Yeah, one party state rule banked everything on being able to control this.

Look at how our democracies fared- backlash, animosity, and general apathy now among a majority... COVID-strict policies became a heavy weight around many politicians necks...

Now translate this to China... a lot will likely suffer so the CCP retains power.

Wishful thinking - authoritarian rule has survived much worse than this. And several democracies are moving closer to authoritarianism in response to the COVID lockdowns (see e.g. Trump's popularity increasing).

The downside of this is that China's actions will convince American conservatives that Germ Theory is no longer a thing.  Sad stuff.

I think you misinterpreted my last line... I anticipate authoritarian rule surviving, just that a lot are going to suffer to make it look as if it was the superior way all along....

i.e. not just suffering from being sick

He's the fifth player on the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse Team. They didn't have a horse big enough for him and he specifically requested his own colours.

Look and see what the USA would look like if the American left had their way back in 2020. "We should be beating Covid like China. They know how to defeat a pandemic in a way that we can't in the USA thanks to Trump!" was a common refrain on these boards.

We suffered a lot of deaths, but in some ways the "plague rats dying and vaccines for the rest" approach was like ripping off a band-aid. China is going to be going through these lockdowns for years if their goal is zero Covid.

my understanding is china's initial vaccine was not as high quality as the Pfizer/Moderna/JJ vaccines. so there is a lot if issues with the Chinese vaccine not getting the job done. So the vaccinated/unvaccinated divide in the US will be very harsh.

That and a high percentage of elderly were NOT vaccinated.

PLUS covid-0 policies meant nearly no prior immunity.

What politicians were brought down by strict COVID policies?

Most of America didn't do anything more than institute mask rules. For the few states that did more than that, those leaders have by and large remained in power because they're from solidly blue states.

If we had the same death rate as China, we would have saved over a million lives. China's death rate per million pop is 3. Yes, 3. Ours is 3,026. Glad we "ripped off that band-aid" though.

From a week ago:

The more contagious omicron BA.2 subvariant now makes up 72% of Covid infections that have undergone genetic sequencing in the U.S., according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

BA.2 became dominant in the U.S. last week, and now appears on track to displace the earlier version of omicron, BA.1. Ali Mokdad, an epidemiologist at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation in Washington state, projected that will happen within the next two weeks.

BA2 has been the majority of cases in America for two weeks now. Up to 70something % of cases as of a week ago.

We have better vaccines than China and everyone here caught original omicron. There are a lot of reports that we may only see an uptick, not a spike.
