I used to think Saban was the biggest asshole coach  in CFB. Dabo has lapped him and Lane Kiffin.  He is the Coach K of college football

He's a bible following man.

And slavery is right there in the bible.

"I am against anything that devalues education"

So,  he is against practice while school is in session, traveling for games, Bowl Games, and anything else that devalues education by taking the students away from time they can be focusing on their education? Sure thing.

I don't know what the answer is, but it's the wild west in college sports right now. There are thousands of players in the transfer portals, and that can't be good for the games. You can't force an athlete to stay at a school they don't want to play at, but there needs to be some kind of regulation. Add in NIL, where the Univ of Miami QB is making $60,000 for making a few social media posts and the playing field is far from even. Again, pay the kids if you want, but there has to be something to make it fair to all schools, if you want fair competition.

Really? Saban?  In the same sport as:  Hugh Freeze, Urban Meyer, D.J. Durkin, Ed Orgeron, Art Briles, Joe Paterno, etc....

You have got to sort out your priorities.

from the article:
"Swinney said Clemson won't actively use the transfer portal unless there is a gap the Tigers need to fill on their roster. "

What sort of gibberish is this? All this means is that they will, in fact, use the transfer portal just like everyone else. The ability of people to rationalize their hypocrisy should never be under estimated.

I said this in another thread, but (from what I've heard at least) there are around 1000 kids in the transfer portal for college basketball with around 4000 total available scholarships. That's including scholarships for incoming freshman from HS. The transfer portal is ultimately a good thing but if players over-abuse it some of them are gonna be left out in the cold. it seems like less of an issue in football though

That's a slippery slope if you professionalize college athletics, and now you've got salaries and taxes and you can fire kids on the spot and they've got to pay for their tuition and they pay for their housing and everything else.
Athletic directors would sign up for that in a heartbeat. They'd save money.

The guys who are fighting tooth-and-nail against paying college players would sign up to pay college players because they could fire them and make them pay for housing and tuition.

As opposed to right now, where they can do the same thing?

Dumb ADs don't want to pay their players because they're greedy. Smart ADs don't want to pay their players because they're greedy and they know they'd be in a bidding war against Alabama for players.

My gripes with Saban were from awhile ago.ive let go of my hatred of him. But Dabo is just the worst.

Urban Meyer is way ahead of Dabo in assholery and all-around douchebag behavior. He's f*cked up and ran away from the consequences with the "heart issues" excuse at how many schools? And he was a dick and lasted less than a season as an NFL coach.

Unfortunately, some players are recruited simply to keep them away from your rivals. Or as backups in case your "star" doesn't pan out the way you expect.

But don't you dare learn where the money for his 2021 season paychecks came from. Also, don't you dare learn that the money Clemson itself didn't spend on those paychecks enabled the existence of non-revenue sports.

Urban Meyer, Ed Orgeron, Art Briles, and Joe Paterno are no longer coaches.

/Though Hue Jackson tried to get Art Briles back

Yea, you just keep defending that system that enables a select group of the elite to get rich off of those bearing the actual risk not being able to earn FMV for their skills who can lose it all based off one season ending injury.  That doesn't make you an asshole at all.  No sir.

Though unrealized, not mentioning the original contention while oddly responding to thoughts not expressed says more than was intended. Thank you for letting me know that an agreement has been reached.

I think he's right about the blown-up-and-reorganized part. Given that most states' legislatures won't properly fund public institutions of higher education, we have to figure out where these institutions should get their money to operate as we'd like them to operate.

If we want those millions to come from athletics, then those programs should be restructured to bring in maximum income to the university, which means promising, in proportion, maximum income to its athletes on the field, in the gym and elsewhere.

Yeah, it sounds distasteful and non-traditional. But another route is total divorce. That is to ask, WHY are universities even in the business of athletics? Let public tax dollars fund academics and vocational programs and no more. Let's just have "club" sports affiliated with, but not integral to, public universities, which  graciously build a few fields and stadiums and turn them over to independent organizers of independent leagues.

I've been saying similar since I was a y00t in Florida.

But I'm an immigrant so the US model seemed weird to me from the get go.

like they're not already in a bidding war?  does a top recruit want to go to west bumblefark university where no one will see hm play or one that has a top program and will get him famous and into the pros?  maybe not competing with dollars now, but definitely competing with prestige
