Holland America Line cancels 3 voyages to house Ukrainian refugees on cruise ship

I first interpreted that as "cancels 3 voyages intended to house Ukrainian refugees" and not "cancels 3 voyages so that they could house Ukrainian refugees".

Huh. Well, I've never booked a cruise, but if I ever do I know which company I'll choose.

This would be a brilliant gofundme.  How many cruise lines do you think are out there at 50% capacity that could free up some ships for this? It's meeting an urgent need while still allowing them to pay their employees (the horrible wages being a different discussion that is beyond our scope here).  Even better, they aren't burning half the fuel that a normal cruise would.  It's a win/win.

Except for China, India, the Middle East, and most of SE Asia, but sure, the rest of the world's united.

Being an American abroad after 9/11 but before those clusterfarks in Afghanistan and Iraq was pretty sweet.

One that doesn't cancel your holiday so it can house refugees?

Wasn't the UK talking about doing the same thing with seized Oligarchs' mansions?

Looked up the ship, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS_Volenda, it was launched in 1999... it's in the back end of it's life for a cruise ship.  It also spent much of 2020 locked out of ports and let go of most of the crew.  They're probably going to use the time to do as much maintenance as they can which mechanically is basically everything.  Once the refugees are out they're going to clean and do repairs on all the living areas and put her back out to sea for her final years.

Don't get me wrong, it's cool they're doing this.  But this is a business decision.  The ship needed an overhaul anyway and cruise lines still haven't recovered from the pandemic.  They get some good publicity out of something that makes sense to do anyway.

/two cents

Almost all cruise ships were locked out of port doing circles in the ocean with a skeleton crew in 2020.  There were a billion articles on it and how the crew were basically prisoners because no port would let the ships in.
I think there was something big and scary Goin on in the world in 2020

Oh no!  They pollute the planet and I might catch norovirus!

Or I could stay in Ukraine and risk death.

Tough choice.

The Islamic world felt sorry for us after 9/11.

After 2003 they hated us.  To the point where Americans abroad would claim to be from Canada.

Um... what's your point?  Or more accurately what did you think my point was?

My point was that it went about a year without proper maintenance and repairs.  There's a good chance the ship needs an overhaul.  3 months will give them a lot of time to handle all the mechanical issues she probably has piling up.
