Yes, I've already done this.

A Wii with a 2tb hard drive can fit nearly every single Wii game, in addition to some 30 years worth of retro games.

I letter bombed a Wii once. Then my father in law asked for it back. I've got a couple of broken Wiis that i could fix and do this to.

I need to find a good step by step instructional video on how to make this happen. Like one that shows all the steps onscreen because otherwise I get lost.  I'm not tech savvy.  :(

This sounds like a more updated version of the same thing but a bunch of years ago there was an app you could download where you told it your Wii's region and OS revision and what potential exploit entry points you had and it would effectively build an SD card image for you while farting out a README that gave you the step by step process of what to do with it.

That is a lot of work to play all the games that you remember fondly but when you actually play them again, you realize it was the nostalgia and not the games themselves that you enjoyed.

I bought the Intelevision collection, the Atari collection, the Midway collection for my XBox and after scrolling through a handful of the games, and trying to play them, I realized I just don't like them anymore

You use a Gamecube controller.  Then you never get around to playing most of the ROMs you downloaded.

Most of those games were meant to be played by 2 people sitting next to each other and trash-talking. If you're trying to play them alone, you're not doing it right.

So I bought a bunch of games during the Wii era via the eShop that are tied to the specific Wii that my fam owns. I have backups of those sneaker-netted to my PC that I would like to play via an emulator, such as Dolphin. Anyone know how I can extract the key information from my Wii necessary to decrypt those eShop game files for use with an emulator? I saw some instructions for this once upon a time but they involved basically installing Linux on the Wii, and that seemed like a one-way trip into a gray area I wasn't too keen on taking at the time.

Yep.  Whenever this topic comes up, people jump through hoops to justify how they're not just morally right, but basically obligated to pirate old video games.  Yes, preservation is important, but preservation in general does not mean that every person is entitled to have a playable copy in their possession.

If you want to pirate, just do it.  At least have the balls to admit you do it to play games you like and not because you're some moral crusader devoted to the preservation of a lost piece of media.  I pirate, but I don't pretend it's anything more than wanting to play old games.

Yep. That's why I can't get into retro games. They were most fun when that's the best we had.

I did this for my SNES mini since I already have any N64, Wii or Gamecube games physically that I want. It was super easy to do. I don't want to fark around with my Wii too much because that's what I play lightgun games on but maybe I'll find one at a thrift store an mess with it.

I'm not a historian, there's no preservation happening here because the files are easily and readily available and I'm not the one saving, sharing or preserving them.

I guess I'm just trying to do my part to keep global warming down.

You really have to actively try to screw up the process (or suffer a power outage at the absolute worst moment) to brick your Wii, and as long as you install BootMii/Priiloader and back up your NAND, even if you do manage to so you can just restore it

By pin fix, do you mean replacing the part that accepts the cartridge?  I did that a while back and it's a really quick and easy job. Definitely worth doing.

True the process is super easy these days. But like I said, any effort seems silly when I already have the SNES mini modded as my emulation box and nothing else I really want that I don't already have the game for. I guess it'd be easier to create save states instead of locating memory cards.

Unless they've REALLY streamlined this process, it is NOT for the faint of heart. I did it like 10 years ago and it was *awesome* (can you say "Dragon's Lair"???) and I cannot recommend it enough. With an external drive loaded with everything, you have access to endless games.

But damn, is it a challenge to get it all working together.

My personal rule has always been that I only pirate games that either I have purchased legally or that aren't reasonably available on a currently supported system. If I want to play it, and they make it possible for me to give them money for it, I'll give them money.

I got my Wii jailbroken, added the homebrew channel and am able to run the roms I have but can only get it to work using the SD card slot and only using non SDHC cards, which limits me to 2gb capacity. It's a shot in the dark, but has anyone here gotten around that issue? My kids love Wii Sports and Play and I don't think there's a modern equivalent of those motion controls used in a current console.

This doesn't answer your question, but Switch Sports is just around the corner. I lost my copy of Wii Sports, so I'm looking forward to playing that with the kids. If it's even half as fun as Wii Sports was, I'll be satisfied.

Still have one of those in a closet with 4 controllers, 4 VMU's, a VGA/DVI adapter, and a mouse/keyboard adapter. It was neat hardware, and I really liked the controllers. Got a lot of use out of that system, back in the day.

In other news, people still haven't jailbroken their Wiis. I did it long ago when the Wii was still in its development window because the optical drive on my Wii had gone to shiat. The FCEUX channel was one of the things added as well as the virtual drive.

You load stuff off the edge-side USB slot. Used to be you bought an external HDD but I suppose these days you could do just fine with a now-cheap USB 2.0 stick (no need for anything faster) 256GB should be enough for all the Wii or GCN games/WiiWare/ROMs worth playing, 512 if you really must have everything. You format it to FAT32, use a program to dump the ISOs/WiiWare titles to the drive, then use one of the USB loader programs to play. You're out of luck on the SD slot since it's non SDHC compatible, although there's some compatibility charts out there that will tell you what still works, like a few 4GB cards. I think you don't even need to use the SD slot anymore past the initial setup, the Homebrew channel and everything else should be able to be told to read from USB

/youtube should have plenty of step by step videos

I find the idea of "piracy" no longer applies to our free market in these situations.

IF a company wants my money they can have it by making a reasonable market offer for product.
IF a company refuses to make product available on the market, what part of "free market" did they seem to have forgotten about?

I'll take their offer as soon as they make a reasonable one, otherwise these here free market offering seems to be working out just fine.

I do not  consider it a reasonable "feature" of any "free market" to get to deny any and all market access to any thing. The MARKET makes it available, and it is Nintendo's chocie to not be who is reaping those rewards.
This is the reality of a real free market, product CANNOT BE DENIED by anyone.

So there is no justification needed in my eye, for taking the only reasonable offer the market has offered.

I have already been ripped off by Nintendo paying for retro game access through my switch and it blows fooking ass. It's a fooking rip off that pales in comparison to what i can get for free online in emulators for my PC as well as superior library access.

It is just Nintendo with fingers in ears going LALALLALLA i can't hear you, trying to con the rest of us into believing their market offer is at all reasonable.

technical ownership cannot over come the actual free market, it's just behaving irrationally relative to it and making a good case for why the rest of us should not bother to pretend their paper work ownership matters to us, if this is how they treat that power.

The Wii's real strength, in my opinion, was the accessibility. It had games using those Wiimotes which were simple and intuitive. For a while there Wii's were frequently getting whipped out at parties, with people watching and waiting in line to be the next bowler or tennis player. The Wii was great for group games.

This might be interesting if I hadn't done it back in 2010. Also the original Xbox is the king of emulation, kind of hard to do most mame8 games on a Wii system but Xbox handles it like a dream
