zevia is... weird stuff. maybe they've changed their recipes a bit, but last time I had any was 2013. manufacturers have gotten much better at hiding the stevia flavor (e.g. the True Lemon sweetened packets or Sparkling Ice fizzies) but zevia? completely obvious. unless it's much-improved, I'm not even sure how it can compete against Coke/Pepsi.

hammazon records show I purchased a "rainbow" variety case back then, but after that only ginger root beer. so I guess that's a ...vague endorsement... of their rootbeer?

/and, yes, Subs, I do miss the RC Cola of my childhood!

I'll go further and say all Zevia sodas I've tasted are abominations not fit for human consumption.  I say that as a drinker of diet root beers and diet ginger ales.  The aftertaste is foul and holds the same appeal of opening up packets of stevia directly into my mouth.

The only thing I'd consume of the things in this article are the ice cubes in the picture.

A cursory glance shows they're all caffeinated sodas. So for me, list fails before it even started. Sprite or 7-Up '0' would be my jam.

/can't have caffeine due to reasons
//misses morning coffee

This for me.  I don't do diet anything and especially soda because they all taste like shiat and I don't need to diet.  Diet Dew is they Only diet soda that doesn't taste like chemical garbage to me.

The taste of LaCroix and others like it will seem lacking if you are coming from the sensory overloads that are Coke/PepsiCo products.  Once you removed your addiction to diet sodas and switch to the sparkling waters, they taste pretty good, imho.

childhood-me is still eternally pissed off there was never a non-diet version!

I wanted to say my Zevia kick was after having bought all those cases of Mexican Fanta, but... newp, spamazon history shows Fanta obsession as 2 years after Zevia. not even sure what the hell I was thinking.

Anything containing aspartame is an abomination, with stevia following closely behind it.

Aspartame tastes like drain cleaner, with an aftertaste that last hours. Stevia has less of a chemical flavor but it still lingers in a bad way for way longer than it should

Only artificial sweetener I can stand is sucralose (Splenda), which Diet Ice uses for their drinks. The lemon/lime or dark cherry flavored ones don't really taste like artificially sweetened to me.

/although too much sucralose supposedly negatively impacts your gut biome
//the real trillion-dollar invention would be a cheap production method for left-handed sugar. Normal sugar molecules are right-handed. Left-handed sugar molecules taste exactly like normal sugar to humans, but your body lacks the receptors to process and digest it, so it will pass right through your body without providing any calories. We can make it in small quantities in the lab, but it is very expensive.

interesting! I knew that there can be some wacky differences in cis/trans isomers (e.g. benzaldehyde in natural vs. synthetic almond essence) but that is a new one on me.

Hopefully, it just passes through in a non-Olestra manner.

Huh, a list I can kinda agree with, though get that cherry crap out of there.  If I wanted fruits in my carbonated beverage, diet 7-up and diet-Sprite exist...

It's a shiatty list.  Hyper focused on Colas, grudgingly letting in Dr. Pepper, but pushing the gross Pepsi Zero Sugar as the best?  REALLY?

Where's Sunkist Orange Zero (formerly Diet Sunkist)?  Which is great.  Or 7Up Zero (formerly Diet 7 Up)? Which is far better than expected.  Or Schweppes Ginger Ale Zero?  Also surprisingly good, as long as you like Ginger Ale in the first place.

Also Polar Diet Orange Dry?  Fantastic.  Hard to find, but fantastic.

RC is already over-sweet Pepsi.  I couldn't imagine the diet substitute, and I'm not sure it'd leave me feeling as hollow as Coke Zero, which still just tasted like a re-branded Diet Coke.

I'd assume that most people would never know the difference, and those that do should wipe that shiat-eating grin of their face.

As I remember it, RC once advertised itself as  "Easy on the syrup. Easy on the gas."

Which means that it was "Heavy on the water."

___

I remember RC Cherry Cola as better than the other two big names, but I haven't seen RC Cherry Cola in around 20 years. At least.

____

I hate diet sodas.
