Less than two weeks later, both of her sons were dead. Neither had been vaccinated.

"Even though it does not seem fair and does not seem right, down the road we will find a reason for why things happen," said Houtz, 71, as she sat at her kitchen table.

I think I know the reason why it happened.

Wise said Lisa likely caught the virus from him after he was infected in October. "She had no regrets about not being vaccinated," Wise said. "She thought she would pull through."
His wife's death has not persuaded him to get vaccinated because he believes his earlier infection has given him immunity.

Well if you don't care, I don't care about you

She did not get vaccinated because she worried about how a new vaccine, developed in record time, might affect her heart condition.

I got vaccinated as soon as I could find an open appointment slot. Because I knew how COVID would affect my organ systems.

Will the county and state flip blue solidly?  If yes, ok.  If no, come back later.  I'll see how much I care then.

Heck, I got wheeled in to get mine two weeks after major surgery. Four doctors told me to go ASAP.

Whatever you were stupidly thinking a year or two ago when the Orange Conman was weaponizing your fear, now you have hard evidence that not getting vaccinated killed a lot of people you knew.

Are you still anti-vax? If so, you're not misinformed anymore, you're just willfully stupid.

I'm wondering how many of these "republicans will sweep the midterms!" predictions have failed to take into account just how many republican voters essentially suicided themselves because freedumbs.

I'm hoping it's all of them.

I've been questioning this for a while.  Maps that were gerrymandered based on the 2020 census may not turn out exactly the way it was anticipated.

Yes. This might be huge for state-wide elections. Take PA, with a senate seat open. There has been a lot of deaths due to Covid, heavily concentrated in Pennsyltucky. This could affect the outcome of the senate election as well as the election for governor. It will probably play a smaller role in the elections for the House or where there are smaller districts, unless it was already a swing district.

The phrase Live and Learn has been updated for the Covid world we reside in now: Live (if you're lucky or smart) and Learn (or 1. adopt the latest conspiracy theory related to the virus 2. Try untested and medically questionable treatments 3. Blame the government A. For rash action related to the virus or B. Inaction (sitting on their hands) related to the virus.

Don't forget that in the first half of the pandemic, COVID was infecting and killing people of color at a much higher rate than white people. So the Dem/GOP ratio is probably not too far from even.

Then add that while 1,000,000 deaths is staggering, it's still only roughly 1in 330 people.

There may be some local elections that go, say, 887 to 865 in a county or town that was hit particularly hard. And maybe that tiny election gets shifted.

But on a large scale, I seriously doubt COVID deaths will change any election outcomes. The percent of the population is too small, and it is unlikely that there is a huge difference between the amount of Dems that died compared to GOPs.

If people vote on COVID response, that might make a difference. But I doubt the actual number of dead Dems vs. dead GOPpers could sway much at all.

Right, but the early waves are already taken into account by the 2020 elections. The 2021 and 2022 waves are where the focus needs to be.

Those dead Dems remain unable to vote. And my larger point is that 1 in 330 people, let's say 1 in 250 voting-age people (a guess) is too small of a percent to sway anything but the absolute closest elections, which tend to be local, especially when people on both sides of the aisle are dying.

Let's say 70% of deaths are GOP and 30% Dem. And let's say the voting populace is 50/50. If 1 in 250 voters are dying, that's 4,000 deaths. 2,800 GOP and 1,200 Dem. A swing of just 1,600 votes. In our best elections, we have 70% turnout, so the swing becomes 1,120. This is a mid-term, so maybe a 50% turnout. The swing is now 800 per million voters. And that's if more than twice the amount of deaths are GOP over Dem. Which I doubt is the case. And I'm not even including unregistered adults.

Seven million people voted in the presidential election in Pennsylvania in 2020. By my (admittedly estimation heavy) math, that'd be a swing of 5,600 votes. Biden won by over 80,000 and that was considered "close".

Yes, there is always the Florida 2000 example. But any large voting contest that comes down to numbers that close are exceedingly rare.

My math, I guess, is probably more assumption-heavy than estimation-heavy. I guess it is a little of both.

We often hear from these people how liberals and the media are always lying and are out to get them. What they seem unwilling to do is look at how the things liberals supposedly lie about turn out. It is an obstinance that is killing people - their people - and is tearing the country apart.

"The liberals lie about COVID and the vaccine!" Um, the liberals mostly got the vaccine, stayed healthy enough and are still alive. What about that?

"The liberals lie about COVID and the vaccine!"

If there are any lingering, or perhaps I should say surviving, Trumpers here, please note once again:

The Republican Party plan for over a year into this pandemic was to do nothing for anyone and let the chips fall where they may. No mask, no distancing, no quarantine, NOTHING. If not for the educated left, getting people to do these things, it would definitely have been at least double the deaths now.

YOUR PARTY THAT YOU HAVE SUCH FANATICAL LOYALTY TO

They were going to get the vaccine, but liberals made them enroll in a five hour seminar of CRT and have two abortions before getting it, so can you really blame them?

A very red area will still be a very red area despite higher percentages of Covid deaths. Only very purple counties with a fairly large population would be truly affected, and you don't find a lot of them in the country. As for the statewide offices of nearly purple states such as Florida and Texas and Georgia, they are well aware of the issue, and passing laws to drive "libbers" out of state in disgust like lepers.

As someone whose conservative covid-denying, anti-vaccine father died of covid pneumonia, I can only say these people really didn't pay close attention to their Bibles at all.

"For whatever one sows, that will he also reap."

In short, my sympathy for HCA winners ended in 2021. If you didn't get vaccinated and made fun of social distancing and biatched about having to wear a mask while the people waiting on you and serving you and trying to save your life in the hospital were wearing them ALL DAY at work, then I really don't give a flying fark about your death. You bought it. You paid for it. You taunted the Grim Reaper and then were surprised when his bony hand landed on your shoulder. So fark you, and fark your ideology of contrariness and stupidity.
