For those curious about how the tiebreakers are set.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_FIFA_World_Cup_qualification#Tiebreakers

Tiebreakers
In league format, the ranking of teams in each group is based on the following criteria (regulations Articles 20.4 and 20.6):[20]
Points (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss)
Overall goal difference
Overall goals scored
Points in matches between tied teams
Goal difference in matches between tied teams
Goals scored in matches between tied teams
Away goals scored in matches between tied teams (if the tie is only between two teams in home-and-away league format)
Fair play points
first yellow card: minus 1 point
indirect red card (second yellow card): minus 3 points
direct red card: minus 4 points
yellow card and direct red card: minus 5 points
Drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee
In cases where teams finishing in the same position across different groups are compared to determine which teams advance to the next stage, the criteria depend on the competition format and require the approval of FIFA (regulations Article 20.8).[20]
In knockout format, the team that has the higher aggregate score over the two legs progresses to the next round. If aggregate scores finish level, then the away goals rule is applied.[a] The away goals rule is again applied after extra time. If no goals are scored during extra time, the tie is decided by penalty shoot-out (regulations Article 20.10).[20]
The team that scored more goals away from home over the two legs progresses. If away goals are also equal, then 30 minutes of extra time are played, divided into two 15-minute halves
If there are goals scored during extra time and the aggregate score is still level, the visiting team qualifies by virtue of more away goals scored

Canada's already in and Panama might come out hard looking for some redemption vs. that loss to the US on the weekend. Sooo.. I hope Canada plays for the win and *maybe* help themselves land in a friendlier pool for the start of the tournament.

Go Canada!

It doesn't matter; all three automatic qualifiers from CONCACAF go into the same pot and it's a random draw to fill the groups outside of Group A slot 1, which goes to the host country by default.

The drawing pots are usually set by geography outside of the first pot, where the seeded teams and the host goes. So winning probably won't matter since Canada's behind the USA and Mexico in the world rankings.

It seems the pots have been changed.  From FIFA:

As hosts, Qatar will take position A1 from Pot 1, where they will be joined by the FIFA Ranking's seven highest-ranked qualified teams. The countries occupying positions 8-15 on the ranking of the qualified teams will be allocated to Pot 2, while the 16th-23rd best-ranked qualifiers will be placed in Pot 3. Finally, Pot 4 will include the qualified teams in positions 24 to 28, plus three placeholders representing the two winners of the intercontinental play-offs and the remaining UEFA play-off winners.

And then what, it's just 1 member from each pot per group?

Huh. Well, I guess that makes sense due to the playoffs that still need to completed. I wonder if they'll kind of do it like UEFA does with the Champion's League draw in order to avoid geographic conflicts wherever possible.

That ummm, that seems deliberately skewed to result in only 2 outcomes: the obvious high ranked team smokes everyone, or brutal upset.

Sounds like a FIFA level plan

Well, normally; the pots go in some variation of the following:

Pot 1: Host + top 7 teams from the FIFA Rankings (consistent across the board)

Pot 2: Remaining European qualified teams

Pot 3: Teams from Asia & Africa

Pot 4: Teams from North and South America

The idea being that there should be geographic balance in the groups, and teams from the same continent shouldn't face each other (except for Europe, where they qualify so many teams that it's impossible to not have 2 European sides in the same group). I suspect you'll still see them try to maintain geographic balance, but still reward the good teams with a better draw.

They fill the groups back picking balls out of pots, 1-4 to fill the 8 groups.

Individually, outside of Clint Dempsey, they're not terrible.  The problem is as a group is gets very awkward and there is no chemistry at all.  I think Charlie and Gooch, with some more experience, can be very good hosts.

I'd thought I'd read the pots were different this year, I'm not sure CANMNT even with a convincing win can gain 10 spots in the rankings from just this last round to get out of that 4th pot, though.
