Surely they'll still let Russian loyalists visit, though.

Oh dear....Monaco has been declared an unfriendly state? I'm sure that THAT will hurt Monaco's feelers.

It seems to me that a country desperate for foreign currency would want to make it easier for visitors possessing said currency to enter, but hey, what do I know.

It was already a huge pain in the ass to get a visa to Russia before - involving a trip to the embassy, having to provide a list of every country you had been to in the last 10 years, and giving up your passport for a week for processing. Oh and you had to book flights before you got your visa, so your were farked if they denied you.

Hard to see how these new rules are any worse. It actually saves us all a lot of trouble because we never have to go there any more.

Oh noes!  I can't visit a country that has always been on my "no" list.  What a shame.

IIRC, the last time I had to get a visa is when I traveled to Poland in 1990.

/Not sure if I needed one when I went to (then) Czechoslovakia a year later.

Lulz.

The worst place I have spent spring break was Spokane, WA.

/Was there because my cousin was in a high school basketball tournament.

For now, the list includes Norway, Iceland, the United States and Canada, the EU states, the UK, Ukraine, Montenegro, Switzerland, Albania, Andorra, Liechtenstein, Monaco, San Marino, North Macedonia, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Micronesia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Taiwan.

If Norway, Iceland, and Switzerland are on your "unfriendly" list. The problem isn't them.

People are trying to GTFO of Russia, not in.
About 250-300K have left already. Expect another equal number by next month. Most of them are younger people who won't return. Their kids will be born or raised in some other country. The older sanctions imposed in response to Crimea, which aren't as bad as the ones currently in place, had already pushed out about a million people between 2014 and the start of the current set. All the soldiers killed are also in their prime years. The population decline of Russia continues. They've had about three years of positive population growth since the fall of the USSR. They can't attract immigrants, they can't keep their young to stay.

I will admit that I would like to see The Maus (the tank) IRL. The only example of which is at a museum a little bit outside Moscow. That's really it.

/ If I really wanted to see Russian space capsules or something, all I'd need to do is go to Hutchison, Kansas.

Speaking of Russian spacecraft:

Side note:

I visited relatives in Lviv, Ukraine in 1990....when the USSR still existed.  Hopefully I can make it back there some day.

Nah, the restrictions are against unfriendly states. Red states are obviously friendly. Hasn't it been obvious the whole time why we call them "red" anyway?

A decade or so ago, I went to Moscow to see an art show. Isaac Levitan, widely considered the most Russian landscape painter of all time, although it causes some pain and confusion that he was both Lithuanian and Jewish. Well worth the trip despite the visa pita. I rather liked Moscow and the few Muscovites I met. Brusque and dismissive attitudes, but honest about it. I grew up in NYC, so I felt right at home.
