Why continue with a country that might break apart or suffer internalized regime change? It's not a safe bet, so you can't exactly blame them. Especially when they can pick better facilities at a song in a few more months when they economically colonize the Russian states.

Putin just became a bad investment alive and a better investment dead.  Biden speech seems to have made some waves.

Bravo on the headline.

Frankly I'm surprised, because it really felt for a while that China wanted Russia in their pocket a bit for their eventual invasion of Taiwan.

In his defense, it's difficult to appropriately go clown shoes when you're just one shoe.

I still think that was in the cards. But there had to be an actual effort by Russia in Ukraine that would make everyone forget about anything China might be doing. But once Putin decided that FTroop was good enough, this war has become such a farking circus that everyone is paying attention...

Who needs Taiwan when you can shop the fire sale on the continent in a few months?

I mean, I'm mostly kidding. I know Taiwan is to China as Ukraine is to Russia, given the history there, but who knows. I would thing that China, should Russia fall apart, would rather create a bigger buffer with India / Europe, than go for the short term win by seizing Taiwan.

Excellent point.  I would assume there are more downstream disappointments in dollar values, too, but the fallout is not the point of the article.  It would seem to be almost a pittance of a loss, but the effect will felt somewhere and that will be unpleasant for those affected.  I don't intend to sound glib, just topical.

China also probably wanted SOME kind of military backup. You don't make a deal with the Wehrmacht and find what you've got is the guy from "Hogan's Heroes."

Yeah, its pretty clear that Chinese war planners have taken a very hard look at how drone, satellite swarms and portable missile tech favours the defenders and how many Taiwan has/can build. Until somebody comes up with a reliable counter to a thousand drones directing a similar number of portable missiles, massed forces invasion by ship is not a viable tactic. My guess is that the sabre rattling against Taiwan will tone down for a few years.

It also signals that they believe the EU will in fact stop buying Russian natural gas. Which makes investing 500M to produce more gas in a country that can't sell all it produces a non-starter.

This whole fiasco might signal the end aggressive land grab wars with attempted occupation. It's just futile.
The populations of countries are too large now.. Not only does an invader have to fight the trained military,
but would also have to fight an insurgent/partisan army made up up of the people. It's a  suicide run
for a military to do that.

Still no cure for civil wars though...

/what's so civil about war anyway?

I think, had Russia mounted a more...effective campaign...China would be singing a much different tune.

China knows at this point it's a waiting game.  Better to keep ones country available for rebuilding slices of pie when Russia ends up needing a ton of help to rebuild from The Hunger Games.

And about 33% of 2022 GDP at the rate things are going. Quit pretending Russia has an economy: it doesn't just like it doesn't have an army.

This is a signal for western countries to up the pressure. Get NATO to schedule a vote to add Ukraine, Finland and any other countries that make sense. Schedule it out 2 weeks and tell Putin that if he's still in country when they are added we will use military force to aid Ukraine.

Without china in their corner they're done. They only thing left is, is Putin crazy enough to launch a nuke. I don't think he or the people around him are crazy enough to do it. And realistically if they are than he's a threat that can not be allowed to exist and we'd have to deal with him anyways. Appeasement will just make him stronger and us weaker. It just makes the inevitable harder, since he won't stop if he's crazy.
