(SlashFilm)   For "Touch of Evil" Orson Welles changed filmmaking forever. In mundane driving scene, he dumped janky-looking rear screen projection used in Hollywood since forever and figured out how to film Charlton Heston driving real car on real road   (slashfilm.com) divider line

Orson said to him patiently, 'All right, let's do it once more. This time, if you aren't sure of your line, just move your lips-we can dub it in later. But whatever you do, please God don't say, "I'm sorry, Mr. Welles."' That's the take that's in the movie.

This made me larf out loud

There's a scene in Dirty Dancing with Johnny and Baby traveling in Johnny's car. The car is in park the entire time.

If Orson Welles had ever seen Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, he'd shiat his pants.

Not to notpick, but I'd say there was a bit more than a "touch" of evil in the movie.
Maybe not enough to call the film "A Roundhouse Kick of Evil" but nevertheless more than a "touch".

Neat article. It's easy to forget that common techniques of filming today were innovative at one time.

forgot to add:  with cameras getting smaller, rigging them to cars has gotten pretty easy.

My wife and I just watched the brand new 4k version of the restored Touch of Evil just this week. It's a really stunning film, with brilliant technical and directorial style listic touches that were hugely innovative and it's editing is still utterly contemporary, or still ahead of its time after all these years. Wells took a ridiculous pulp book and turned it into a fascinating study of corruption, race, and forced us to enter a world in which you felt you were trapped in someone else's nightmare. He really was one of the few geniuses in cinema. Some people only remember citizen Kane but when you look at his legacy of films such as magnificent ambersons, othello, macbeth, lady from shanghai, f for fake, chimes of midnight, Touch of evil, the trial, and a few others, he really left a stunning legacy of innovative filmmaking and storytelling.

Taxi Driver was shot during a New York City summer heat wave and sanitation strike in 1975. The film came into conflict with the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) for its violence. Scorsese de-saturated the color in the final shootout, and the film got an R rating. To achieve the atmospheric scenes in Bickle's taxi, the sound men would get in the trunk and Scorsese and his cinematographer, Michael Chapman, would ensconce themselves on the back seat floor and use available light to shoot.

I am, of course, referring to the opening sequence, which is almost as well-known as the  steadicam kitchen scene in Goodfellas
