I'm going to publish my own listicle, which will be this listicle except that all of the items on it have saffron sprinkled on them. BAM. Just like that, the stuff on my list costs more.

bird's nest is just flippin' gross. and vark/warq is beyond farking stupid.

I'd happily try fugu, given the chance. plus apparently it ain't that expensive

Of all those, I might be willing to spring for a taste of the Ibérico ham, but that's about the only one that I'd even consider.

Iberico is delicious. Thankfully, a couple slices isn't all that expensive because it's usually sliced really thin.  Same for saffron, truffles, and vanilla - you use such tiny amounts at a time, it really isn't all that bad. $/kg is a fairly useless measure.

They had it at my local Wegman's once.  I wanted to buy some, but they couldn't find the special knife they needed to slice it.  So they couldn't sell it to me.

I was at a place that served Iberico, and I was excited to try some. Came slathered in truffle oil. Should have sent it back.

/At least they claimed it was Iberico...

Iberico comes in different grades, but none are cheap, especially compared to US ham. I've had Bellota. It's great but too costly. Serano is usually what you get in restaurants.

A container of saffron may seem expensive, but a pinch is enough to flavor an entire dish so that little container goes a long way. It's also available at any grocery store. Seems like low hanging fruit to put on the list.

/ Want to try moose cheese

My sister used to work on a cruise ship based in Sydney.
Apparently they dump so much I-can't-believe-it's-not-Truffle-Oil on a lot of the food that it turns most of the staff off the taste for life.

Definitely something that tastes great, but only if you don't overdo it.

Rich people food, for the most part, is dumb.

I've had stuff with truffle oil before, it was basically just grease that tastes vaguely of mushrooms. I'm all about ham, but see no reason to spend a ton if I don't have to. If given the opportunity to try the expensive shiat, sure, but I'm not taking out a loan to eat ham.

About half that stuff on the list sounds/looks gross, most of the other half is just pretentious shiat produced in some needlessly elaborate way for pretentious people.

only because it already came to mind in the recent toast thread of all places: all my poor student friends in Barcelona always had a big ol' jamon serrano hanging in their kitchens. rich parents, fell off the back of a truck? not for me to question why, just gimme dat noms!

Tarl3k: Also I had foie gras a few times in culinary school, and whatever you have to pay, it's worth it.

I was never even stuck on goose in particular, tbh any of the highly-fatted-up terrines (pork, chicken, etc.) is farking delicioso. well, that and I much prefer rustic styles to the finely-grinded/fancy.

altho' when I see those kind of places that offer foie gras on a burger, I just want to beat them about their head and face.

then again...

Truffle oil is garbage and shouldn't be compared to actual truffles.

There is a good portion of the list that is just stupid, like edible gold.  But a good portion of the other stuff is just expensive because it's rare/difficult to harvest/etc.  I wouldn't call it pretentious because of that.

Tarl3k: Also I had foie gras a few times in culinary school, and whatever you have to pay, it's worth it.

Wegman's occasionally sells D'Artagnan vacuum sealed small portions.  I wouldn't call them cheap and you're limited in how you prepare it, but it prevents you from having to shell out big bucks for a full lobe.  And since I'm the only one in my family that likes it, that helps too.

I tried it in a restaurant in France, and I believe the opposite. It was essentially a savory, tasty paste, but needed texture in order to make it good.

Granted, I also say that my trash palate may be too unrefined to overlook its cruelty. (Exception: one farm in Spain where the free-range geese happily get fat on their own)

/Fugu prepared well in multiple forms is really good. (Sashimi, soup, sake, broth, etc.)
//Iberico is also well worth it, especially on a good chunk of melon.
///edible gold is a farking trash item on that list because it contributes nothing but expense to a dish.

I've had six of those, and not much interest in the others.

When I made my earlier post, I had forgotten about the d'Artagnan foie gras that my best friend from uni brought up to the cottage.  Mighty tasty.
