The one that weirds me out is staircases with sections missing. I have to jump or climb my way out. Another one is bathrooms that aren't private. I'll find myself at a toilet that's in the middle of a living room with people coming and going. But never snakes.

The full link is interesting.  I could make some junk science guesses about where the teeth dreams appear most.  I've never had a snake dream and I just knocked on wood, I wonder what the psychology is behind them.  That, and the wedding dreams.

I have had the two you mentioned but they are very rare.  The staircase dream is weird when I have it because it all seems to be normal, much like the tooth dreams.

East Africa (where humans and humans' direct ancestors spent at least a couple of million years living in) contains lots of venomous snakes.  So it makes sense that "be afraid of snakes" is sort of hard-coded in younger humans.

Working on lucid dreaming! It is the hardest thing I have ever done to enable lucid dreaming, and I have only done it once so far. Reality checks are crucial.

Yes, but the snake dreams are not limited to east Africa.  Snake dreams are abundant in other places, including many that you would expect.  I think you're short-changing human psychology by tying it to early human experience instead of wondering what the snakes represent to people in those places and what they might then represent in their dreams.  Additionally, attitudes towards snakes vary in all of those places, it would make sense that the meaning of them in dreams might vary, too.  I would not expect them to be as simple as a child's nightmare.

One of the things that Anthropology 101 said was almost universal was that young humans tended to fear and avoid snakes.  You can see how this would be useful in premodern society, so it makes sense for the behavior to be conserved.

Additionally, attitudes towards snakes vary in all of those places, it would make sense that the meaning of them in dreams might vary, too. I would not expect them to be as simple as a child's nightmare.

Of course, as people get some experience and learn stuff, they'd figure out that A) not all snakes are the same B) some snakes can be useful or interesting, depending on exactly what kinds of snakes they are.  So it would only be the youngest humans who would instinctively fear all snakes, and older ones would have a much bigger range of behaviors based on local culture more than anything else.

Yeah.  People are freaked out by spiders, too.  I don't think I'm communicating well, what I mean is, what is it about snakes, what do they represent in the dreams, and why are they so common, where other dream representations of the conscious mind in nearby places manifest as marriages, cutting hair, or the dead?

What is going on in their lives that is so culturally common that causes them all to share the same dream?  How has a snake come to represent stress, eustress, positive or negative change, or other?

I have yet to figure out why I'm so casual about pulling teeth, but I can assure you I had that one much more often when I didn't have a night guard and I was abusing stimulants...

I've never had dreams of snakes or of my teeth falling out. I do, though, frequently have celebrity cameos. Never anything sexual, just that they happened to be there. Steve Buscemi as a school bus driver, Patrick Stewart sitting next to me at work, Sandra Bullock selling me newspapers, Hilary Clinton as a dinner guest at my house are all recent examples. If they ever find a way to record dreams I'm going to have to pay a lot to their agents.

I dream a lot about broken/confusing architecture, I'm convinced it's a metaphor for the shambles that is my memory.  Like, my memory palace... is in ruins.  I also do the tooth thing, and I have anxiety, and I grind my teeth, so I get why that's a thing.  And the constant quest for a free toilet? Check!  And then I wake up, and I really have to piss for real, so that just seems like another thing my body is doing that my dreams are just reiterating.

The falling dream and the teeth falling out are the usual. But I've got a town, all but mapped out. The sign says Velour Heights, but it only exists in my subconscious. I've even got a job there.
The scariest nightmare I ever had, however, was one in which I was forced at gunpoint to do an awful thing to someone. It was grisly. I woke up crying.

I think at least part of it is that snakes are all over the place and encountering a snake is potentially stressful for a hunter-gatherer or a subsistence farmer.  Many snakes are total bros, but the venomous ones can seriously ruin your day.  And many snakes are sneaky, subtle, silent, and sartorially superb.  So they're potentially dangerous, but still kind of cool, so they show up as important symbols or totems in many cultures.  (Inuit, Yupik, Laplanders, Irish, maybe Patagonians would probably be the exceptions.)  It's similar to how every culture that was near crocodile habitat came up with a "dragon" myth.  (Crocodiles are big scary reptiles that can kill you, dragons are a crocodile's big brother.)

Heck, north African wildcats and their descendants the domestic cats have instinctual reactions to snakes.  (Or cucumbers, I could put a cucumber next to a sleeping Her Fuzziness and she'd freak the fark out upon waking, but that's kind of a dick move.)  Apes, monkeys, and at least some birds have distinct warning calls they give out to their troop/flock if they see a snake.  Snakes have been around for roughly 100 million years, that's plenty of time for animals to evolve instinctive reactions towards them.  And this probably carries over from conscious thought into REM.

Yes, that's more what I'm looking for.  In some places where the dreams are most common, snakes are also viewed not only as part of the circle and cycle of life, but also as beings who possess knowledge of medicine.  Greek mythology concerning the same is why the caduceus features the two snakes.  Fact check me, but snakes are also thought to possess knowledge of medicine in India.  The more color that is given to them, the wider potential for understanding why they might appear in a dream.  And, let's not rule out that they can represent some pretty immediate danger, as well!  Like I said in my (this will get filtered) Boobies, I could throw out some junk science - a legitimate socio-anthropologist could probably bring in some better ideas.

But peacocks?  Alright...

I have sleep paralysis with hallucinations so I've seen grinning men and Nachtmär, although I called her death girl at the time since I didn't know who she was.

As for dreams, server nightmares. From decades in the industry I dream there's a table that I can't get to. Like no matter which way through the restaurant I go, I just can't get there like a freaky Labrinth.
I am not alone several of my server friends have their own traumas resulting in very specific nightmares, forgot the ranch is common. That'll have one waking up in a cold sweat. Oh also the no menus nightmare. Like your seating tables but there's never any menus to give the table.

When I'm super stressed out I dream I got my period at a super inconvenient time. I haven't bled in years but still get this dream.

When snakes shed their skin, it usually comes off as one mostly intact piece, like a sock or something.  And the snake's new scales usually look more vibrant/colorful than the old ones.  Ancient people interpreted this as the snake renewing itself and thus being great at medicine.  This is not totally dumb.  However, new scales != new snake.  It's more like "I repainted the house, but the oven is still 30 years old."

The dream is always the same. Instead of going home, I go to the neighbors'. I ring, but nobody answers. The door is open, so I go inside. I'm looking around for the people, but nobody seems to be there. And then I hear the shower running, so I go upstairs to see what's what. Then I see her; this... girl, this incredible girl. I mean, what she's doing there I don't know, because she doesn't live there... but it's a dream, so I go with it. "Who's there?" she says. "Joel," I say. "What are you doing here?" "I don't know what I'm doing here; what are *you* doing here?" "I'm taking a shower," she says. Then I give her: "You want me to go?" "No," she says; "I want you to wash my back." So now, I'm gettin' enthusiastic about this dream. So I go to her, but she's hard to find through all the steam and stuff; I keep losing her. Finally I get to the door... and I... find myself in a room full of kids taking their college boards. I'm over three hours late; I've got two minutes to take the whole test. I've... just made a terrible mistake. I'll never get to college. My life is ruined.

I dream my exabuser is abusing the dog we had together. And she gets older in every dream, and the abuse gets worse. Had it again last night. I think it's because I'll feel guilty forever for not taking her with me, homeless in a city that 90% won't rent to dog owners. Living in my car with 90lb dog... I should have done it. This dream will haunt me forever.
