FTFA: When people's average perceptions of group sizes are compared to actual population estimates, an intriguing pattern emerges: Amercians tend to vastly overestimate the size of minority groups.

I'd love to see this broken down by political affiliation. I'd guess that right-wingers are more inclined to overestimate the prevalence of minority groups due to years and years of OOGA BOOGA BOOGA THEY'RE COMING RIGHT AT US

Although this probably explains the anti-trans fervor.

aren't they?
One GOP close to me - highly educated - who reported voting against Turnip in 2020, told a story of standing in the voting booth paralyzed for 30 minutes b/c she just couldn't bear to vote for someone who would give more free handouts to parasitic immigrants.
That was my bellweather of a reasonable GOP

It's very easy to say that group A is this or that group b is that. And that's all the further that many people take it.

/ I would also say that less mainstream viewpoints sometimes have outsized megaphones because they have a very limited group who subscribe to that viewpoint and the group in question wants to expand its size. It's easier to do that if your very loud.

It's peculiar -- they vastly overestimate almost everyone - except themselves. In their minds, it's like 150% of the population is a minority group, and white folks, are not actually living there.

Yet, white people are everywhere, lol

And that's why Christianity is so popular with Americans .... because they really don't know any better, and our society is run by people who try very hard to make sure people stay stupid.

Even just going through that questionnaire... nobody realized that this would require a PREVALENCE of left handed black transgender Jews living in New York City, California?

I'm calling bullshiat on the actual percentage for "read a book in the past year."  It doesn't specifically say so, but these statistics have to be self-reported.  There is no fusking way half of Americans have read a book in the last year.  I doubt outside of school, half have voluntarily read a whole book in their adult lives.

I  think that number reflects a whole lot of people too embarrassed to admit they are incurious numpties.

I call shenanigans. No way Americans think that 40% of their fellow citizens are vets or black.

Also how do they think 34% have 100000/yr but 20% have over 1M? So 14% make between 100k and 1M?

Or that 30% live in New York? No one can believe that.

I can't believe these are true because I don't want to live in the world where people are this ignorant.

https://www.pewforum.org/religious-landscape-study/

This is the best survey of religions in the US.  They say 3.1% are atheists.  Note that 4.0% are agnostic and 15.8% say "Nothing in Particular" (which is split up again in 8.8% saying religion is important and 6.9% saying religion isn't important).

but:
88% own a car.

Please tell me that it is NOT true that 5% of Americans own a car but do not have a Driver's License.

I could see 1% - Grandparents that lost their license and refuse to admit they won't get it back.   But a full 5%?  Tell me it ain't so, joe.

So for the New York thing, I think people tend to confuse the population of New York, the defined incorporated city, and New York, the cultural megalopolis as defined in the metropolitan statistical area that stretches from central Connecticut down to almost Philadelphia. The former has a population of roughly 9 million people and makes up 3% of the US population, the latter has a population of roughly 30 million people and makes up about 10% of the US population AND has a disproportionately high level of influence on everything American. It's easy to think NYC is bigger than it is when pretty much every sitcom ever except for Fraiser takes place there.

The thing that really bugs me is that it's impossible for 50% of households to have an income greater than $50,000 since the median household income in the US is $65,000. Literally 50% of households, by definition, has an income of over $65k, so is YouGov implying that less than 1% of the population earns between $50k and $65k?

Define "average".  IE, the median number, by definition, means half are above and half are below (well, ignoring the number that are exactly the median, assuming we are talking integers and not infinite numbers after the decimal point).

I was going to rant about how they should have just shown median instead of both mean and median, but the medians were surprisingly similar.

Also, for the NYC question, I couldn't help but be reminded of this:

I'm having trouble believing that 89% of Americans made it through high school.

Also, last I remembered US Jews were not that much over 1%, so either we're really cranking out babies or we went from 1.4% to 1.6% and it got amplified by the rounding on this chart. I'm guessing its rounding.

Americans aren't 50:50 Democratic/Republican. More like 10% diehard Democratic, 10% diehard Republican, and 80% non-affiliated.

Yes, most Americans are extremely ignorant (the most generous description) about most things, a combination of honest failure of the educational system they came out of, deliberate avoidance of learning in general and whatever willful stupidity is expected of them in whatever political group they claim membership of.

After reading these comments. I think half of Fark commenters don't have a HS diploma, or at least need to retake statistics. Lots of you seem to be confused how aggregate answers from a poll can not not add up to 1005, like there was on guy called 'AMERICAN' who answered the questions
