So it turns out the Chantays and the Surfaris had the same artist do their drum heads. Who knew?

Thread hijack warning: what band had the best drum head art?

There's a guy on Youtube named "Todd in the Shadows" who does detailed breakdowns on one hit wonders (amongst other things related to pop music).

Fun fact:  A few years before "Spirit In the Sky", Norman Greenbaum had been the frontman of Dr. West's Medicine Show & Junk Band, who charted a minor hit with "The Eggplant That Ate Chicago".

Back in the day I had 8-tracks of the Inna da gotta vida album and Zager and Evans.  I liked both quite a bit.

The "Archies" had a hit before Sugar, Sugar (Bang-Shang-A-Lang) that peaked at 22.  I'm not sure what constitutes a "hit", but cracking the top 25 seems like that should qualify, especially since others on list didn't reach that high.

Came here to say this.

Also, a "one-hit wonder" isn't a singer or group that had only one number one hit.

Otherwise I'm sure people like Neil Young would be on the list

For at least one article writer, the '60s may never have ended.

Spirit In The Sky and Harper Valley PTA are great songs.

Met a guy that was in the Archies not too long ago. He was working a regular job doing training for for SharePoint Designer, seemed like a nice guy. He said the one time they tried to meet people live or do a show (I can't remember which) it was a disaster.

Where is jughead? They asked.  I guess one guy was pretty old in the actual band and no one looked like the comics. They probably didn't think that all out.

Spirit in the sky is one of my favorite songs in spite if its overt religion.

The Archies were created because Mike Nesmith punched a hole in the wall that was close to Don Kirshner's head.

Stafford also sounded a lot like another chart-topping artist, Elvis Presley, who many fans originally believed sang "Suspicion."

They were right. Elvis recorded it first.

My uncle way back in the day recorded a ton of Beatles songs to 8-track for me and my brother. That was somewhere around 1975. To this very day, I can't hear certain Beatle songs and not mentally hear the track change from those recordings.

I only had a few 8 track tapes and none were very good so I don't suffer the same syndrome.  I did, however. have a warped LP copy of The Yes Album that had a noticeable squeak every 1.67 seconds for the first few revolutions:

Squeak sqk.  Squeak sqk.  Squeak sqk.  I've seen all good people turn their heads each day so satisfied I'm on my way. Squeak sqk.    I've seen all good people turn their heads each day so satisfied I'm on my way. Squeak sqk.  do-do-do-do-do-do-doo  Squeak sqk.  etc.

Eddie Vedder stole my friend Patrick's hat. The dude has issues.

It's like looking into a bizarre alternate reality where the Beatles never existed.  AKA, my parents' record collection.

//not quite true
///the only one they had was Winchester Cathedral.

huh. i would not have thought that hendrix had any hits. im under the impression that the most 'iconic' artists of that period actually didnt get all that much airplay in their time.
