Eat healthy and live a few years longer or eat delicious food and die a few years sooner.

It boils down to:  Quantity of life vs. quality of life.   Choose wisely

My father died at 51, my mother's father died a 53, my brother died at 47.  I'm 70, so I'm not concerned about sulfur-containing foods, like garlic, leeks, onions, scallions, shallots, peaches, apricots, sultanas, and figs, asparagus, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, red cabbage, radishes, turnip tops, and watercress.

I listen to my body: It says, "We must have beef or die!"  AKA iron deficiency

There is something in that article that makes me more hungry for that kind of food, not less, I wonder what it is...

"...may..."

More "meta-analysis." When "may" and "might" vastly outnumber "does" or "will" in an article, you're reading conjecture. When you see this phrase, you should walk away & ignore any and all "news articles" based on that conjecture, until such time as the phrase itself is satisfied:

The results are considered preliminary until the full findings are published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Seriously, ETNT is an embarrassment. I don't know why Fark keeps greenlighting articles from it, except as argument bait.

It's not an "either-or," that's the worst part of that article. Basically, that's a long-winded, BS-filled screed which boils down to "everything in moderation."

FTA: "The new research highlights that diets high in animal protein (namely surfer-containing amino acids in meat, chicken, and dairy) are linked to poorer health."

How the hell are surfers getting into cows and chickens?

I think this is saying to stay away from shark meat, and maybe shrimp, crab, and other scavengers who eat whatever the sharks missed.

So, I had to look. It seems like the accompaniment of antioxidants with your meals is really the important factor. Meats after all are complete proteins containing the full set of amino acids. I'm not fun this am, but more informative than ETNT. Here's PubMed:
Abstract
Methionine, cysteine, homocysteine, and taurine are the 4 common sulfur-containing amino acids, but only the first 2 are incorporated into proteins. Sulfur belongs to the same group in the periodic table as oxygen but is much less electronegative. This difference accounts for some of the distinctive properties of the sulfur-containing amino acids. Methionine is the initiating amino acid in the synthesis of virtually all eukaryotic proteins; N-formylmethionine serves the same function in prokaryotes. Within proteins, many of the methionine residues are buried in the hydrophobic core, but some, which are exposed, are susceptible to oxidative damage. Cysteine, by virtue of its ability to form disulfide bonds, plays a crucial role in protein structure and in protein-folding pathways. Methionine metabolism begins with its activation to S-adenosylmethionine. This is a cofactor of extraordinary versatility, playing roles in methyl group transfer, 5'-deoxyadenosyl group transfer, polyamine synthesis, ethylene synthesis in plants, and many others. In animals, the great bulk of S-adenosylmethionine is used in methylation reactions. S-Adenosylhomocysteine, which is a product of these methyltransferases, gives rise to homocysteine. Homocysteine may be remethylated to methionine or converted to cysteine by the transsulfuration pathway. Methionine may also be metabolized by a transamination pathway. This pathway, which is significant only at high methionine concentrations, produces a number of toxic endproducts. Cysteine may be converted to such important products as glutathione and taurine. Taurine is present in many tissues at higher concentrations than any of the other amino acids. It is an essential nutrient for cats.

I was mocking the sloppy writing / editing of the article.

(They had 'surfer' instead of 'sulfur')

"We don't need to entirely eliminate foods high in sulfur amino acids like meat and dairy, but we should focus on creating healthy dietary patterns," Young says. "We should not focus only on those amino acids but rather on creating healthy dietary patterns in general."

So the entire article is useless. Just eat healthy.

The kids' school did a pizza kit fundraiser for Pi Day, so it looks like pizza's on the menu tonight.  At least they're not the shiatty kits that come with that thick precooked crust.  So I'll be able to get something decent out of it with our own toppings and the pizza oven.

Dammit, wrong thread.  I think that might be the first time I've ever done that.  Well, it was food related at least.
