It's not the ice that'll kill you; it's the water underneath it.

emergency crews rescued two men from the gelid waters of the Saginaw Bay

Good word, Cole Waterman, and a far better introduction to it than those idiotic "word of the day" headlines that keep popping up on Fark.

/ also: I think "Cole Waterman" is a bit on the nose for this article

Don't pick on Wisconsin. We have enough trouble. I think we have to give Aaron Rodgers a percentage of our paychecks now.

How about a Go Fund Me page to relocate dumb and dumber to Nevada instead?

Then they can worry about having to be rescued from a casino fountain.

And these guys also go to polls and consider, for a brief moment, who should govern us.

Hopefully, they got billed for their rescues. That's SOP in Arizona when they have to rescue someone who drives into floodwaters.

I really hope that doesn't become a Wordle answer.

Article says no, but I remember when Arizona added that penalty.

Don't worry, "Cole Waterman" is too long to be a Wordle answer.

In Michigan, back in my day they actually taught how ice cells work in basic geometry class probably to avoid this.

Mine too, their stupidity was a lesson for us all. Some people do have a purpose in this world.

I hope this time the rescuer pushed their equipment in to the water to prevent a third attempt.

I really don't think "gelid" works. It means extremely cold. If it were extremely cold the ice would still be ice and none of this would have happened. Think it through.

"Gelid" is a perfectly cromulent word.

Fishing equipment can be stupid expensive now. Stupid is as stupid does or something like that. I like cookies.

Could be a good $25K (or more) worth of equipment out there, so I can see them making the effort. Might be their only source of income, as well, or might be a friend's equipment or something.
Good to see there's a GFM for a recovery, to be followed by a 'roast' of this group.

I grew up in Michigan in a house on the banks of a large river. Every year, people would fall through the ice because they were too dumb to understand that 1.) Fast-moving rivers freeze over a lot less solidly than still lakes (especially if they've been polluted by a major chemical factory as this one had) and 2.) In mid-March there has been enough warm sun shining on the river to make any ice that was formerly somewhat-stable not stable anymore.

Neither of those things stopped guys from walking out there with a bunch of ice fishing equipment, or riding out on an ATV or snowmobile and losing it to to depths of the river. Some people died. Some were rescued. All were fookin' idiots.

It used to infuriate my folks to no end when complete strangers would pull their truck into our long country driveway, park in our back yard, and walk to the river as if our private property were a public park.

So-called "sportsmen" can be some of the dumbest, rudest people in this state.

3rd times a charm boys. Get back out there on the ice, I am sure the lessons you learned from the past two rescues will come in handy. And if not, Mr. Darwin has a nifty award waiting for you.

Now that I have that snarky remark out of the way, the saying "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." is the reason Liberalism is considered a mental illness. Voting for Democrats having all societies social ills magically disappear has never worked and in most cases have only made things worse. But yet like to two idiots from the story, they keep trying.

The saying "The definition of insanity is doing something over and over again and expecting different results" is one of my favorites of all time!

...beacause I then instantly know that the person who said it is a complete moron and incapable of independent thought, therefore I can stop wasting my time with them.

A 12 foot inland waters flat-bottom boat is not safe in Saginaw Bay. This is Lake Huron... in the winter. I am sorry they lost so much due to the thin ice. I hope everything will be ok.

I think "Gelid" is one of those words I read when I read Lovecraft, along with squamous, batrachian and tenebrous.

Adjectives are my favorites.

(Tenebrous was probably Poe.)
