I remember a History Channel show that veered into the sideshows, and one man showed off his mummified mermaid. He followed it up by saying "I hope I don't lose it, I have to call my taxidermist to make another"

The thing in the article looks like some kind of primate + creative taxidermy

Yeah, "let's hope that's a monkey" was my first thought, cause otherwise someone did some sick shiat to a child's corpse, including filling it with sharks' teeth.
