Cafe Threads: "Greed."

That's it, that's the entire reason.

Marketing.  Folks who buy trucks for no good reason and SUVs that are more bus than cars are what drive fuel prices.  Gas prices will go back down when demand goes down (and up again when folks get sucked into the status of being a big consumer).

Gas has been increasing long before the current Ukraine conflict.

American-Irish eyes: Gas has been increasing long before the current Ukraine conflict.

Technically correct; in a "NY Times Fact Check" way.  It has increased from the price it was when we first started tracking it.  It's also increased from the last recession-based freefall, almost back to normal.  Adjusted for inflation, you're still paying less for gas than you were in the early 2010s.

Just more proof that the media is in bed with the politicians.  Gas prices were rising before Putin sniffed the border and companies are gouging us right now.

When Biden was asked "Thank Putin". Literally only statement.  Very convenient.  These people don't give a shiat about you and will construe the narrative that will make them look good at your expense.
