Nothing is worse than sales bros.

And I work in marketing.

It's not going to convince many. Especially in our society. Vegans generally don't list a ripped bod in their top 3 reasons to become vegan. It's completely possible to "beefcake" (hah) as a vegan, but surprise, vegans aren't necessarily motivated to make those particular lifestyle changes any more than the vast majority of meat eating America.

Although I've met a number of "obligate omnivores" (sigh) who claim even vegetarianism will rob them of their... Mojo? Essence? Whatever. It's not scientific or rational, vegans flexing, whilst entertaining for some, isn't going to be a sell.

Eliminating beef and dairy subsidies OTOH. The threat of a skinny wallet tends to overcome the fear of veganism/vegetarianism pretty damn fast.

"Hench" is a desirable adjective now? As in 'Hench men?' Like people are proud of being anonymous, disposable mooks for an evil villain?

I'm trying to remember if I was obsessed with posing all alpha bro when I was a young man.  I mostly remember just going to a lot of parties and staying out until 7 in the morning.

But trust-bust the tiny number of meat processors who dominate the industry, remove their regulatory capture advantages, and watch the price come down.

We're saving up to buy half a steer just like we buy lambs. Cheaper for us. The farmer gets more.

I always enjoy these articles where they trot out the most fit, the most intensive, the most specialized specimen that they can as an example of "what's possible" when the average reality isn't anything close. These people couldn't even survive without expensive diets and constant exertion; it is all they do.

I don't care what others eat, and yes, focusing on (some) grains and vegetables is the most healthy diet for most people (explain that to an Eskimo), but for farks sake, quit pretending that vegan alone makes you into a super person.

I've known "hippies" all my life (the ultimate source of veganism in the US), and I'll tell you what... cross-fitters and iron-maners they aren't. You want to do yourself favors, cut out all soda, all fast food and most processed food. That alone is more than most people can even comprehend.

I'm too tired to pull it together. A great line from Keifer Sutherland in 'Flashback' paraphrased "My hippie parents raised me in a commune. I didn't want soy flour carrot steak. I wanted to make friends at McDonald's."

Getting all the nutrients is possible on an all-plant (and fungus) diet, but a few of them are difficult without supplementation. And if you have to supplement it's not a good diet. The worst are the raw food people. The very first chapter of Catching Fire: How Cooking Made Us Human details German experiments with an all-raw whole-foods diet that would have turned any other primate into a mound of lard. The humans couldn't keep weight on, and the women of childbearing age became amenorrheic. Not saying it can't be done - millions of Jains manage. But it requires planning and care.

Even then - use your own google fu - about a third of vegetarians report cheating on their "no animal" pledge when drunk according to studies. People in rich countries eat more meat and dairy than is healthy, but there's definitely a strong tendency to crave the stuff even with people who have made moral or health decisions otherwise. Anecdotally, the author of Laurel's Kitchen recounted in an interview that when she ran the eponymous restaurant the ovo-lacto, pescatarian, and omnivorous customers were the most easygoing. The plant-only crowd tended to be a lot more aggressive.

For a "beefcake" bod it's iron that tends to be difficult to get when you don't have a grocery store stocking things like spinach.  That's a very inexpensive and readily available supplement. Proteins and carbs are very easy when you're vegan. Too easy with carbs. If you're willing to eat sea algae (and really, who isn't?)  That goes a very long way. Yeast and fungus are globally available for vitamins and minerals.

I don't eat meat, but also spent a few years strict vegan when I lived in Hawaii (when the GF is vegan that kinda makes you vegan). The cuisine of Asian and (modern) islander cultures  accommodates veganism to a surprising degree.
