I was going to make a snarky comment about the Russians taking bronze in their invasion as well, then I realized they didn't even place, having been narrowly edged out by old Ukrainian women and their pickle jars.

These are the kind of asshats where it's worth risking a foul if you give them a groin-punch.

He would definitely take the gold medal if they had a most punchable face competition.

Eh, leave him alone. His prize money's only going to get him half a roll of toilet paper, and that's after he waits in line for 15 hours.

Enjoy getting what you wanted, punk.

He'll probably feel a little different about it when he's drafted in two weeks...

After winning bronze in the parallel bars final at the Apparatus World Cup in Doha, Kuliak taped the letter "Z" to the front of his outfit before standing next to the gold medallist, Illia Kovtun of Ukraine, for the national anthems.

So that's what Putin meant by "de-not-Z-ing"  Ukraine. He's just flooding the country with "Zs" so you can't say there are not Zs in the Ukraine any more.

Seems like there are easier ways to do it than committing war crimes.

/And doesn't the Ukrainian President's name START with a Z?

The Ukrainian competitor should have gone all KTFO on him. I normally don't condone that type behavior in sports, but this is an exceptional situation.

That's what I thought.  Have fun in Russia, son, when you're too weak from hunger to practice your game.

I'd be a lot more likely to watch that than regular gymnastics.

And what the hell anyway?  "Z" isn't a Russian letter, it's "З", as in "За войну" .

This is what they get for the half-assed "you can't wear the russian flag" BS.  If you outright ban them, you don't have this happening.

I don't see the problem.  It seems to be how Russia marks all it's equipment that fails to win.

Most likely it was selected as a largely arbitrary symbol to put on assets involved in the invasion as a distinguishing mark.

It would be something unlikely to find on Ukrainian vehicles and is a quick, easy way for the Russians to identify friendly forces when they use many of the same vehicles as their enemy.

They may have also anticipated adding many captured vehicles to their forces with the expectation that most of the Ukrainian military would collapse upon the invasion.

Any meaning ascribed to it is likely an after the fact thing when it got picked up more broadly.

I did that and that seemed much classier than praising the murder of Ukrainian civilians.

Epic fail!!

from another article

"The 20-year-old, who on Saturday finished third in the parallel bars final at the Apparatus World Cup in Qatar's capital Doha, had the letter "Z" prominently placed on the front of his outfit as he stood next to Ukraine's Illia Kovtun, who won the gold."

It also strikes me that Z would be a better symbol for those supporting Ukraine - Z for Zelensky.  The letter Z is too cool for the Russians.

Ohhhhhhh.... I get it

See, all this time we thought Putin was calling the Ukrainian people Nazis...

When in fact, he was just angry because he was told by his military commanders that Ukrainians are not Zs!

Phew! Glad I cleared that up. All a simple misunderstanding of language on Vlad's part.

Anyway, can someone get me on a line to Sochi? I have some explaining to do to the Russian leader. Boy, is HIS face gonna be red!

Except Zelenskyy's name is spelled with a "З" not a "Z" ("Володимир Олександрович Зеленський").

The mental gymnastics it takes to justify the invasion deserves some type of recognition.

It's short for Zapad, which means West, in Russian. It's to indicate the western theater for the military and has taken on extra meaning.

Why would Russia use Z instead of 3 if it was actually supposed to stand for something?

Also it is used by the easternmost forces attacking Ukraine

I was feeling sorry for the Russian athletes who would be affected by the ban, right up until I saw this asshole. And heard the coach Rodienko justify him - blaming the Ukrainian athletes for provoking the Russian athletes and being rude. There is a time to just shut up and be thankful you were allowed to compete at all.
