It was gonna be a one-way race to the Ukrainian border, so no great loss.

The pit stops might have been fun to watch, tho.

Honestly, I'm surprised that the FIA would overcome its greed.

They were probably worried that Mazepin would accidentally drive into Ukraine anyway.

I heard they're even going to downgrade them to Russian Tiny Prix.

They used weasel words saying "current conditions." So if Russia cools out, they'll put it back on.

Haas took all the uralkali livery off everything and Steiner said that mazespin is probably gone.

The reporters at Racer magazine are saying that the wording is just for covering their asses and F1 will not race there at all.

This is just me talking here: with all the sanctions coming down on Russia, F1 would probably violate some of those if they went there; just like Haas would probably be violating some of those if they kept the Russian ties after this week

We don't know how that contract is written. They might have the out clauses necessary to get out of it. Steiner said they need to work through the legal stuff before announcing anything.

But is Mazepin really going to be out as a driver? It would be nice to not have him on the grid and put an actually talented driver in that seat. And sponsorship would be difficult, but if you have Mick Schumacher on that team, it's possible to pull in other sponsors. And of course, none of this is considering the fact that Andretti is about to get into F1. It would be cheap for them to buy an existing team at a deep discount instead of starting from scratch.

Also, Mazepin's father was one of the Russian oligarchs who actually met with Putin a day or two ago. That's not a good look for F1. And yes, I know that's saying something for a series that races in Saudi Arabia.

At least Masi is still on the job.  After a 2 hour rain delay, forces in Ukraine will line up behind the safety tank for a lap around Kiev.  Afterwards, due to a diplomatic technicality, the Netherlands will be declared winner.

They've appointed two new race controllers who will alternate each race, and the teams are banned from talking to them during the race.

If there was any loss of respect it was when Haas took on Mazepin as a driver, took his father's money, and allowed Nikita to stay as a driver after he posted that video online of him committing sexual assault.

And this is just my opinion, but I feel that F1 has evolved from contests of driving skill, to engineering prowess via cubic dollars, to the current state of mobile money laundering circus. I don't think they would feel guilt about racing in Russia. I think they are afraid that someone with real money would become a target.

Having two WDCs both say that this is bullsh*t and shouldn't happen, and one of them outright say he would no-show if they tried to make it happen, is quite the thing.  Still, they pulled the trigger on this much faster than I anticipated, which makes me think someone really big (Hamilton) was about to join them.

Yea, that's what I was referring to. I mean they lost all this respect 2 years ago when this soviet shiat show started. Reading back, I didn't make that clear. My  bad.

This is going to permeate way beyond F1... Russia has been a sizeable force in auto racing at all levels for a decade or more now.  SMP Racing has been one of the biggest driver development programs in racing, and they're likely going to be gone.  G-Drive is a huge factor in sports car racing.. they'll be gone (the G stands for Gazprom).  And there's a lot of Russian kids trying to make the dream that are going to lose it all... the biggest one of which will be Robert Schwartzman, who doesn't seem to be a part of an oligarch family, comes across as a genuinely nice and humble guy, and has talent for days, with a real shot at an F1 seat on merit.  But Putin's gambit has screwed him all the same.

The only Russian driver that probably doesn't get massively screwed is Kyvat, who is Russian by birth but that's about it. In fact, I think his family is on Putin's bad side.

Plenty of drivers for the seat: Giovanazzi, Piastri, Hulkenburg are the ones who jump to mind, but Grosjean or Magnussen might also be names to think about.

But I could see Herta taking that seat with an Andretti buy-in, and a transitional co-ownership period.
