On initial play, it feels like an iteration of DS3. Oddly, the combat is both easier and harder. Due to the stealth system, taking out mob enemies can be done by sneaking around in the underbrush and backstabbing everyone. But boss battles are harder; they seem to have more hp and weapons do less damage. They give you a lot more tools to work with, though, and I think getting a handle of things like crafting and the magic summoning system will balance things out.

Given the open world, it'll be interesting to see what speedrunners do to sequence-break things (the game provides a guide to the "intended" path, but you can go anywhere in the game from the start, assuming you can survive).

\also, the death-ghost system appears to not work; when I activate a bloodstain, nothing happens.

I'll check back in 2 weeks and see how the reviews look then.  Pre-releaser reviews and reviews within the first few days of release are usually suspect.

In 30 minutes thing 2 will be on the bus headed to school. Then begins 5 blissful, uninterrupted hours of playtime.

I played it for 5 minutes and refunded it.

All reviews from the likes of Kotaku, IGN, etc. are suspect.

I need the Zero Punctuation take down, the Jimpressions, and a survey of the dedicated subreddit about 2 weeks after the new game glow has worn off.

Even then I'm still going to wait for a deep Steam sale.

I got burned with Forza Horizon 5 and that's the last time (I say after falling for the same trick dozens of times over.)

If you have a console, get it on console.

I don't want a console.

Console = no mods

Yeah, I've been seeing a lot of complaints of it being laggy as hell on PC.

It's at least prettier than the Souls games or Bloodborne.

It's a FromSoftware game. Do you think it will be anything short of awesome?

I've only played one Souls game and hated it.  It was repetitive and frustrating.  I was looking forward to Elden Ring until I found out it was like those games.  I might check it out in a couple years when it goes on sale for $20.

I wonder if the game director is in any way related to Hayao Miyazaki; or is "Miyazaki" as common in Japan as "Smith" is in the US?

I've been playing their games since King's Field.  I wouldn't describe everything they've done as awesome.

For some dumb reason I've been getting this game mixed up with Lost Ark in my head.

As someone who sucks at souls games, has never beat any of them and usually gives up halfway through, I'm enjoying it! It'll be another great half game in the series!

I wish I could enjoy FromSoft games. I've tried. I just don't like them. I'm happy for everyone who does, though. This is going to be one of the all time great years in gaming, I think.

I thought "Elden Rings" is what you counted when you cut Foggy's leg off:

I don't enjoy the Souls-like games, or really difficult games in general.  I'm 54 years old and something like Witcher 3 (finished) or Borderlands 3 (finished) are more my speed.

However, due to the hype, I just watched a gameplay stream and the guy died repeatedly to some giant spider boss with a shield multiple times, each in under a minute.  Never got the spider below 90%, so I quit watching.  Something tells me if I check back in around lunch he'll still be fighting the spider.  I realize tons of folks love these type games, but they aren't for me.

Not as common as Smith, but it's a prefecture in Japan, and the capital of the prefecture. The name itself is geographical.

Yeah, it's capped at 60 FPS, which doesn't bother me, but every couple of minutes there is really bad stuttering, usually twice in a 10 second period which means if you are trying to fight any enemy when it happens, you're pretty much dead.  I love the Soulsborne games, but I'm really annoyed that so many people on PC are acting like this is no big deal and doesn't bother them that much.  It makes the game borderline unplayable, and apparently this is with a patch that "fixed" it from where it was prior to the launch date.

Yep. From what I've seen so far, most Japanese surnames are geographical or descriptive of natural features -- wisteria, rice paddy, mountain, plains, and so on. You also see prefectural names like Fukuoka and Miyazaki.

Surnames are interesting.

Same.  "Oh we intentionally made it hard.  Git Gud lol."

Yeah no I'm not gonna dump hours into the thing just to learn enemy move patterns.

I liked Forza 5, but then I played it for basically free on gamepass.

As for new games, I pretty much never buy day 1 anymore (unless on gamepass or F2P or something).  Even my most anticipated games I'll wait for the first steam sale and some reviews.

Better, easier and more intuitive combat than the rest of darksouls. The several side area bosses were absolute jokes at level 12 in the starting area.  The first actual boss was quite easy too.  However when spending 3 hrs grinding souls by being summoned in to help kill it was painful.

Pro tip: if you have no damage output and no survivability don't get two summons.  The bosses scale with group size!  Get one extra person!  One!

Pro tip two: spend your runes as soon as you can there are a few places where you can get your runes gated behind unexpectedly strong enemies.

Pro tip three: the first field boss is fairly easy to solo at level 14 as an int caster.  God knows how you fight him as melee.

Is the difficulty unnecessarily inflated because it won't tell you how the game works?

I would never buy a day 1 release on PC from a Japanese developer.  Enjoying the fark out of it on PS5 tho
