It's not. But it's also weird that it remained a "2nd party" for that long.

But Japanese companies are really, really weird, and move really, really slowly.

Seriously, Japan still relies heavily on *faxes* for almost all official business.

Great. Now pick up either Capcom or Konami. It's coming eventually, and I think Nintendo would be better than Sony or Microsoft for them.

Wonder what prompted that, they were basically already glued together as it stood.
Maybe someone wanted to retire and assure the ties between the companies didn't suffer for it or something?

Even though Konami's IP stable is vast (and untapped anymore), Komani itself is basically a Yakuza gambling ring at this point. No one wants to touch them.

Not gonna happen. It just isn't how Nintendo works.

The only companies they acquire are ones they have an established relationship with and can easily fit into Nintendo and its culture.

And if things at Nintendo changed enough that they would buy Capcom or Konami, they would be no better an option than Sony or MS.

It isn't so much "Japanese companies" as "Nintendo".

Japan has plenty of massive conglomerates more than happy to eat up anything they can get their hands on, for example, Sony, and has long operated that way.

They were basically a subdivision in all but name, since 1979 according to a quick search. The only non-Nintendo thing they did was make and sell CAD software, but they closed that part of the company in 2019, also from said search. This is less "buy-out" at this point and more "formality".

Iga quit and I'm pretty sure took a large chunk of the Castlevania team with him. Look up a game called Bloodstained if you want to see what they've made in that genre since, but yeah, Konami may have the Castlevania copyright, but they don't have the people who actually made the game.

It's actually pretty rare for anyone other than the known 'names' and company owners in videogame dev to stick around in the same company for more than 5 years.

It's a very mobile workforce.
