My OnePlus 7 Pro is still working just fine, TYVM.

I understand the value in finding out how durable something is, but it looked like he really had to try to break that phone.  Even if it isn't as durable as other phones, that amount of force looks like more than you'd get just by having it in a back pocket (depending on the wearer of said pocket, I guess).

I was expecting it to snap like a cracker, but he really had to push to get those results.

I have a 7t. I'm willing to upgrade to 9pro when it's nice and cheap thanks to 10 being out.

This is why it's pointless to do that sort of testing by hand. You have no idea how hard you're pushing and all anyone wants to do are compare results between phones.

I'm never going to snap my phone, I'm going to throw it.

I anticipated an 'attempt' to be scientific and put the thing in a vise or something but of course stupid youtube fodder means the "test" is "I can break it with my hands."

Call me crazy, but part durability test is seeing what it would take to break the phone if possible and what kind of damage it would take.

"Breaks by hand/Doesn't break by hand" are comparable results. I find that sort of information useful.

"Or something" being putting it in your back pocket and sitting on it.

Gen Z kids are especially fond of breaking their phones this way.

While the exact reason for why the OnePlus 10 Pro broke when Nelson applied some force is unclear, it's worth noting that he was going out of his way to try and push the phone to its structural limits.

I'd suggest making sure the software situation is saner on the 9 side of things before making the jump. My 9 was wonderful before they called Android 12 stable. Putting aside the UI changes that I don't like, my signal went to hell and I lost access to system updates. My non-pro was even claiming to be a pro until I got that sorted and managed to update again later.

/If I wanted a factory reset to be something I did every update and hear fans throw out the "it's new" excuse, I would've slapped on a custom ROM. That's totally not the experience I want using official builds.

And FWIW, I do like the 9 after wrangling it into a somewhat sane situation. I just don't think people should have to go through the trouble after over a decade of smartphones being normal kit.

My Oneplus 1 lasted for years, and I still have my 6 which is working fine. I've dropped it a bunch of times and it's never suffered any ill effects.

I doubt I'll get another phone from them, though.  Their prices have been climbing and are now at the same level as any other flagship device.

Given how clumsy I seem to be with my mobile devices, I should probably look at getting a tough phone of some sort.
