I love the first Raiders, and Last Crusade has it's moments but never got around to Temple of Doom. Then I rented the VHS in the mid '90s or so because I had some weed and how bad can it be?

Between annoying Short Round and also Kate Capshaw screaming in fear every 10 minutes I don't know how I lasted as long as I did. I watched the whole goddamn thing because I was waiting for it to start getting good.

I don't know if it's some weird Speilberg kink or what but Jurassic Park 3 had Tea Leoni  doing that same thing. She single-handedly elevated the awfulness of that movie for me (which is really saying something considering how terrible it was) made it u n w a t c h a b l e.
Spielberg was an exec  producer on JP3. Pretty I'm sure he forced them to write her that way.

I will avoid the obvious, and I will also not threadjack.

First of all. Aliens DID NOT SUCK! That was a freaking miracle that people overlook. Before anyone sits down to list all of the crappy sequels, and before anyone says GhostBusters II or Caddyshack II or whatever, people should appreciate the opposite case and appreciate WHY sequels are likely to suck, and appreciate the effort it takes to make a non-sucky sequel.

Secondly, I like me some Starship Troopers sequels. They aren't great, but they are not lazy. There is some life in there, and some ideas percolating, and fun.

Which brings me to WHY sequels generally suck. They are lazy. They are products made for a known and studied market. That market is frothing fanbois and fangals. They are fan service. Sequels are UNLIKELY to have art, originality, satisfying arcs, interesting characters, clever writing, or any of that stuff. The ideal sequel is a cookie-cutter movie that pushes all the buttons. If it has anything other than that, the producers overpaid. The director had too much freedom. There was waste and bloat on the screen because people were getting something they did not ask for.

I am not sure you can do this, but someone should do an analysis. A sequel that was made "to make money" is definitely going to suck. A sequel that was made "to develop a milieu or idea or group of characters" is not going to suck. Sometimes a studio needs money. Sometimes it is a director. Sometimes a young artist will do something and not for the money, and you get Gremlins II. Or you get someone in love with the characters who can take the whole thing beyond the original movies, as Marvel has kind of done.

And at the other end of the spectrum is "the self indulgent sequel" a la Ridley Scott, or a Godfather III.

skybird659: Shocky sucked.

I couldn't possibly disagree more. The songs in Shock Treatment are very good, the story is far ahead of its time, and Little Nell was never hotter.

Some expert wrote that Hollywood can't give up sequels because they MAKE MONEY.

There's a formula.  ANY sequel of  a successful movie will *guaranteed* make half the profits of the first one.

So Raiders cost $50M to make and earned $300M, say.  Profit of $250M.  If you make the sequel for $50M, it will GUARANTEED make $150M, so you earn $100M.

It works for every successful movie because a certain number of people who liked the first will see the second.

And the beauty is, the sequel doesn't have to be any good.  Just the name will make money.  So make it cheaper and your profit margin can be close to the original.

And in the movie industry, where there are few guarantees, sequels are a ****proven winner****.

And people support these garbage films, so get more garbage films.

John Carpenter once said that studios like sequels because they cost a lot less to advertise.  There's a built-in audience based on the name alone.  Another thing working against sequels vs original movies is the time given to the script.  An original movie can be kicked around Hollywood for a decade looking for a producer.  Which gives the writer a ton of time for reworks and improvement.  Sequel scripts are often given only a few months before the film starts shooting, if that.  Some sequels go into production before they have a script.

Oh, and "The Bad News Bears Go To Japan" is the worst sequel ever made.

Number 3 had be sort of half-watching in my late-night TV bad movie semi-stupor, but I gradually realized that someone with an incredible sense of humor had been heavily involved, and by the end I was literally LOLing and hoping for more.

I'm not sure I ever saw 2, and 1 was bad.  Just bad.

Worst sequel of all time:
Any sequel.

There are the *extremely* rare exceptions. Wrath of Khan is by far the pinnacle of exceptions.

Often the sequel is made because the original was awesome and they want to cash in. In extremely rare cases they make a sequel because they realize the original missed the mark by *that* much.

Sliding Carp: Rage Against the Thorazine: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Personally I don't get the hate for Crystal Skull.  But the Temple of Dumb was absolutely abysmal in every respect.

The general plot for Crystal Skull isn't bad.  Aliens and the Russians made sense for the time period.

The big problem with the film is that while Indy and company certainly stretched the limits of plausibility in the previous films, Crystal Skull basically just said "fark it" and went nuts with it.  Even though deep down you knew Indy wasn't at risk of being killed off, in the original films there was still a sense that the character was in peril.  The fridge scene in Crystal Skull eliminated that right from the jump. And then there was the ridiculousness of the vine swinging, the waterfalls, etc.

Dawn of the Dead is actually better than Night of the Living Dead.  Sometime the sequel is better than the original.  I call it the Godfather 2 effect.

Sliding Carp: Rage Against the Thorazine: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Personally I don't get the hate for Crystal Skull.  But the Temple of Dumb was absolutely abysmal in every respect.

Crystal Skull is like an Asylum ripoff written by someone who had no idea how to stage an action scene, and kept confusing the Indiana Jones series with Brendan Fraser's Mummy movies. ("Hey, what if instead of giant voracious scarabs, we have giant voracious ants this time?" "This time? We never had scarabs. And the callback to the oasis getting sucked into the temple at the end of Mummy Returns? That wasn't us either. It was, you know, the Mummy Returns.")

The usual malcontents want to blame Lucas for all its problems, but while the script definitely wasn't great, the movie's failure is more Spielberg's fault than anyone else's. Despite the lame material, it still could have been dumb fun if the direction wasn't so flat and unimaginative. Temple of Doom is awful in its own ways, particularly in its "Ewwww, weird foreign culture!" xenophobia, but the action scenes are still memorably great even though they're way over the top ridiculous. (The runaway mine cart chase is a blast, but you won't find rollercoaster tracks inside an actual mine unless it was bought out by Six Flags. But while Temple of Doom is cartoonish but adrenalized, Crystal Skull was on the level of an unenthusiastic "Oww my balls!")

Stud Gerbil: Fletch Lives.   You talk about a dropoff from the original ...

Fletch Lives was another example of the real reason you shouldn't try to make a modern version of Blazing Saddles. Just like Wild, Wild West, it tried to lean into that same kind of edgy humor, but without Mel Brooks's perfect blend of sharp satire and campy ridiculousness, those movies just came across as being uncomfortably racist instead of mocking racism.

Agreed.  It was one of the few sequels that lived up to the original, even if it was a different sub-genre of movie.

ALIEN3 on the other hand... gawd that sucked acid-dripping xenomorph ass.  It is responsible for making my friend and fellow SF fanatic Brian avoid seeing feature films in the cinema for nearly 10 years, until LOTR came out.

At least he picked a good one to end his boycott with.
