The problem is right there in the promo pic. I grew up loving BC. I even had a soft spot for Steve, who was/is an ass, but more or less a harmless one.

My problem with Mr. Breathed's most recent work, is he does his best to normalize aspects of life today that should never be seen as acceptable or OK.

Steve was turned into a Trumper. An outright Trumper. The pic of him wearing the Trump Shaman's headgear isn't funny.

If Steve was losing it over something benign, hey, sure. But put him up there on the side of someone who legit engaged in treason.........

It's more normalization. And then we get to see the innocent other chars try to exist alongside those who would, in reality, do their best to exterminate them.

You can't have your cake and eat it too, and Berkeley's been trying to do just that with his new version of BC. If reality is too far out of whack, mirroring it tends to break the constructs that enabled the prior art to work.

I'd prefer entertainment that holds Trumpers up for richly deserved ridicule than one where we pretend such people don't exist because it makes us feel better.

No thanks.

I'm 48, and "Bloom County" was the comic I grew up with as a kid.  But it's time has passed. Neither the "Opus" strip or the revived "Bloom County" are anywhere near as good. They''re both pale imitations of what it used to be.

Breathed was on a roll with the original comic for about 5 years or so. But it's over. It's been over for 32 years.

/this is why Watterson was smart to walk away when he did. You can only embarrass yourself by trying to relive old glory

I've done it.  Not well, it turns out.  Some things are of their time and Bloom County is one of them.

I'd love for dude to get his gazillion dollars, but I just can't see this as anything but sad.

Yup.

EVEN IF they had turned "Bloom County" into a cartoon back in its mid-80s heyday, it wouldn't have worked. It just doesn't lend itself to being animated. Like most comic strips. Has their ever been a comic strip that worked as a show? The format of a comic strip lends itself to specific kind of comedy, how do you do that as a show?

Oh. Oh no. There are few things I loved in the 80s & 90s than Bloom County. Just the other day, 'Night of the Mary Kay Commandos' wandered through my head.
I believe Breathed can be successful, but the strip took a darker turn after his plane crash & I'm afraid w/ greater latitude & media it won't be the funny, absurd thing it was.

Steve Dallas was always a garbage person. In the 80s he was Reaganite always glomming on to the latest scam to get rich, so him going full Trumper is a realistic character arc for a conservative person of his generation.

They adapted it for the medium. A similar thing could be done for Bloom County with the right creative team.

I still love that they got Robin Williams to do the voice of the Kiwi and Dustin Hoffman to do the voice of Milquetoast the roach.

They were both working on Hook at the time and were asked if they wanted to do voices for it.
