The further we get from only having three channels, the more the Olympics become just something else on TV.

The time zone difference means NBC has 12 hours to modify something live into something more like "reality television"

Before I read this article I need a lengthy summary of the writer's life for a few minutes. Did he have any dreams when he was a child? Any family tragedies? Success against adversity? What friends and family does he have watching, and can I see them?

Nah. CNN has the broadcast rights for all wars through 2047.

The last time I recall watching more than just a fleeting moment of a random event at the Olympics was Lillehammer 94.

/Also had the game on Genesis that I'd play against my dad.

Nah, they sublicensed some of those rights in favor of missing plane rights.

I picked up a one month sub to ProtonVPN and have been using the CBC GEM app that I sideloaded on my Chromecast w/GoogleTV, minimal ads and on-demand streaming of every event not just the crap show NBC produces with a few minutes of highlights of the events that Americans did well in.

Timezones, China hosting, NHL not participating... Take your pick.
Entertainment saturation doesn't help, either.

I wonder how many of the commentators are actually in China on NBC's dime and how many of them are sitting in a booth in Secaucus watching the video coverage, because my God they must have a small army there.

I lived about 40 km from Lillehammer when it went down. We got a week off from school because they needed the school buses to ferry tourists, and went to Sweden on vacation.

I've also been to several epic computer parties in the Vikingskipet Olympic arena, so that's nice.

The closest I came to the video game, though, is probably Ski or Die for MS-DOS.

It's not a great game. I'm just largely fond of it for the memories. :p One day I'll make it to Europe myself, I want to see a lot of things but mostly to return to the homeland of Switzerland in my family tree.

A lot of them didn't go, because of all the restrictions.  The reporters are kept locked up with the athletes. they can't leave at all.

They usually have some interesting human interest stories that pull at the ole' heart strings.  The four stories that I'm aware of are 1) the poor Chinese tennis player that was raped and now is doing an apology tour 2) the American teenager who is competing for China because she'll make 10X the money 3) the Russian who popped positive for a banned substance.  Set aside that Russians should not be allowed to compete for at least a generation, the IOC is reluctant to strip her medal because gosh those Ruskies might just learned their lesson 4) China and Russia announced a joint statement against NATO just as Russia builds up for an unprompted attack on its neighbor.  So the only feel good story would be if I shot my TV like Elvis did.

Maybe if they had more interesting events, and FYI, subjective scoring for what is effective skateboarding on ice is not interesting.  I want morbidly obese bobsled teams competing on a track built by half-drunk liberal arts majors.  I want to see the biathlon in a circular arena where the competitors are blind.  Give me outdoor curling played on thin ice.  Also, how about you put the last place finisher in any event on an ice floe with a polar bear?  It's the least we can do to say "I'm sorry for climate change."  These are just my ideas after having that second, ill-advised cup of coffee.  What if we had an IOC thinking up this stuff instead of seeing who can stuff the most money in their pants?

The Winter Olympics are always a bit meh to me because only a fraction of the world's athletes and countries have a chance to compete.  You aren't going to get a decent slalom contingent from Mexico and you aren't going to get any figure skaters from Indonesia.  The sports are primarily those that kids from wealthy backgrounds in cold weather environments can compete in.  That makes the Summer Olympics far more fun to me.  You legitimately get athletes from all over the world competing with one another.  You can compete in track and field about as well in Sweden as you can in Saudi Arabia.

I have to admit that I have for some reason gotten into curling this year.  I love the strategy and how one of the Americans looks like Ron Swanson.  The brewery I regularly attend had it on their big screen a couple days ago and the place erupted when the Americans won a match.

My list of Winter Olympic events:

Curling: fascinating. I don't know why. Bowling alleys are heated, that could be a winter sport, too. We need more drinking in the Olympics.
Half-pipe snowboard: cool as hell, really impressive. Is that red-headed kid still at it?
The ski long jump thing? Admit it, it's like NASCAR and you're watching for the wrecks
Hockey: right on. Not my thing, but okay.
People on skis walk through the woods then shoot at stuff: that's f*cking weird
Downhill skiing: looks fun. I'm more curious which athlete could make it UP the mountain the fastest. I would watch that. Reverse skiing.
And, people dancing in ice skates because it's too cold to go rollerblading. Move somewhere warm.

Danny's take on the Winter Olympics.

Summer Olympics was just month ago

I enjoyed the curling and the skeleton.  I always watch the skiing but it was the enthusiasm of the presenters that kept me watching the half pipe.
Highlight of this Olympics was the stupid Chinese names used by the mostly American players in the China ice hockey squad.

The way things played out it seems like China and Russia were behind all the World Wars.

You are locked in, what you see unfolding before you is your detachment from reality.  There is nothing you can do to stop it.

Here is my take on the Olympics so far...

The good:
There have been some really excellent games and competitions.  Some really great stories.  Some heartbreak (Mikaela Shiffrin), and some truly awesome, well deserved wins (Nick Baumgartner).  There have also been some really excellent showings of sportsmanship.  Like even when a person just got beaten out of the gold, they run up and hug the person that just beat them.  That means something to me.

The bad:
- "We are going to show you [this event you really want to see], in 45 minutes.  First, a retrospective on 20 athletes you've never heard of."
- "This has been great.  And there is more to watch on [some other channel]" And abruptly cut to another game.
- Showing only events that feature USA.  Now I know that the USA is the only country in the world, and all.  But still...
- Is it really live?  Sometimes.  Other times it's impossible to tell.

Another odd thing is the empty stands.  And the quarantining of athletes because of COVID, where they feed them prison food.

2022-02-13 7:11:30 AM
I've watched a couple minutes here and there, mostly to show the kids the "crazy" sports ("here's a guy sliding face first down the ice as fast as we drive in the car, and here's a woman who is skiing uphill, isn't that wacky?"). Tried watching the ski jump but they have the skis locked into a track now so there's no chance for any agony of defeat (probably been that way for decades now, I just never noticed) and all the camera angles they use make it look pedestrian, not like they're flying through the air the length of a football field.

I am highly skeptical that any of those is a major factor.

The evening coverage in the USA is a mix of stuff happening live the next morning Beijing time and recorded events. If the games were anywhere else, evening coverage would be... A mix of stuff happening live and recorded events.

I know China is bad, but is there any country where we would all agree they're good?

And the NHL players participating... So are the ratings for NHL games on tv that high that it would make a major difference if those people watched the Olympics?

My issues with the Olympics:

The athletes' and reporters' nerves are clearly frayed from the forced isolation and lockdowns.  All the interviews are horrid.

Empty stands, almost no spectators - gives a surreal dystopian look to the events.  And along that line...

More cowbell!Yes, seriously.  One of the things dearly missing this year is the spectators at the alpine events ringing cowbells as the skiers race down the slopes.  I had no idea until this year how much I tied that sound to the sport.

There are too many X Games sports now.  We don't need to see fifty different versions of hotdogging.

The team figure skating event has been over for days and still no decision about the cheating Russians.  We all know the IOC slaps a thin veneer over its corruption but that veneer is gone now.

Please get rid of ice dancing.  It's pretty but it's a terrible sport for laymen because viewers can't tell the difference between good ice dancing and bad ice dancing.

I tried watching the new short track roller derby thing.  I really did but it was just too weird.

I and I only want to see the Jamaican bobsledding team. Winter sports aren't their strong point, but win or lose, the post-game parties must have better music and fun ways to fail the drug tests.

Monkeyfark Ridiculous: F*ck the Olympics

I watch curling (really) but nothing else.

Used to donate to the US team (people think government funds them but it's private and corporate donations). Quit because the coaches kept molesting the young athletes and nobody in authority seemed to care. Also, most of them are spoiled rich white kids whose families can afford to pay their own way. They sure spend crazy money on coaching and training.... The US Olympic Committee still frequently sends me address labels and pleas for money. Each time I get them I consider donating to other nation's teams. (I'm fond of the Canadian and Great Britian curling teams...)

2022-02-13 7:41:15 AM
I still think a bunch of indoor Summer stuff should get moved to the Winter Games to help even out the two. the rule about everything needing to be on snow or ice can be chucked. I have no idea how many events, and anything in a pool should stay, but there's no reason things like gymnastics, basketball, various combat sports, etc. can't be done just as well in winter.

Thats My Name too!: Most unexpected viewing: watching the maintenance teams shoveling/leaf blowing the freshly fallen snow off to expose the artificial snow laid down two weeks ago for the athletes to use.

I wonder if the athletes can tell a difference between the two when both are present.

It's more than that, I think.

I'm usually a pretty big Winter Olympics fan.  It's the one sporting event I will consistently watch.

I have completely avoided watching it this time because it's being held in The People's Republic of China.   The government that through its assholishly totalitarian actions caused a local epidemic to become a world-wide pandemic that has killed literally millions of people.

Next Winter Olympics I'll be happily glued to my TV watching coverage of it again.

The last time they played Full Contact Team Biathlon was at the 1940 Winter Games.  Finland took the gold on points.

Simo Hayha of Finland took home the individual gold.
