Don't go too big. Might end up inside of a cooling tower.

No, it's real. They built it in the middle of a former industrial zone.

The second photo appears to have been desaturated, though. I Googled it, and found one that's oversaturated:

Welcome to the wasteland olympics.

Plenty of power there for snow making. Try not to land in the spent fuel pond.

If love blossoms at the Big Air competition can you imagine the amazing talent we're see at the 2038 games? Those extra eyes and limbs will be an amazing advantage.

Looks so weird.

Apparently that whole area is a decommissioned power plant and steel mill that has been turned into an event space.  From what I can gather, one can even hold a wedding ceremony inside on of the cooling towers, if that's your thing.
They didn't go (much) greener, however.  They just moved the whole mess far away from the city.

Every venue, even the ones in the mountains, highlight what a dry and barren place Beijing is in the winter.  I wasn't aware of just how ugly the place is.  It only snows 1 inch in February on average.  Compared to places like Whistler or Park City, it's depressing.

OOC, is this a semi-permanent installation or is it designed so they could more or less fold it up and transport it to another city for another event?

Reuters covered this.  It's permanent.  https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/inspired-or-dystopian-beijings-big-air-venue-sparks-social-media-debate-2022-02-07/

In fairness, Canada and Russia would have to host every winter Olympics if we wanted both snow and countries capable of handling large events aka paying for all that shiat you gotta build.

If this had snow we wouldn't think it was so bad. The fact is it looks like summer time.

OK, I don't ski.  What is it like to ski on artificial snow compared to real snow?

It looks like the temperature is going into the 40's for the next couple days.  What does that do to the snow?

Repressive regimes using international sport to prop up their failing political and economic systems every four years is bad business for everyone except the IOC and NBC.

The US gets a lot of snow. It has hosted winter Olympic games before.

Nordic countries (Sweden, Finland, Norway, etc) get a lot of snow and have hosted Olympic games before.

France & Germany & Italy get a lot of snow in the alps and have hosted winter Olympic games before.

Russia hosted the winter Olympics in an area that is basically a tropical resort for Russia (there's Palm trees!) and was criticized for the amount of snow they had to blow for any ski and snowboard events.

I'm not opposed to holding some outdoor events in more urban environments, and big air seems like a great candidate for that. But a power plant located in an industrial area wouldn't be my first choice.

For downhill skiing it can be preferable. It's just expensive. For the men's courses, and some women's, they actually inject water into the snow to make it harder.

Also, just have Innsbruck host the entire thing every four years. You could realistically get from any venue to any other venue in less than 20 minutes.

I get what subby was going for now, but it was extremely confusing when a Simpsons character already has a well known skiing-related meme associated with them.  I looked at the tweet wondering, "Is there supposed to be some guy in skintight suit in there?"

I probably would have gone Next up on the big air slope: Lenny Lenford or Carl Carlson or Wayland Smithers.  Someone associated with the nuclear plant and who does not have a skiing-related meme.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Oops, should say Lenny Leonard.  Lenford is his first name.

Looks like a permanent installation and while we hear everyone (except the athletes) biatching about it, it seems like it's a pretty damn good facility and a hell of a lot more stable than the temporary wooden ones that have previously been built.

Without a doubt, that location is going to be used for many many events in the future.

Yeah, but you could always get an early read on the wind based on the water vapor coming out of the Davis-Besse cooling towers.

It's over 100 miles from the Perry OH schools complex to Davis-Besse.

I like how the CCP media handlers were trying to get the international media to record from different angles so they could not see the industrial hellscape in the background. I am surprised they didn't try to tear some of it down or paint it all white to look like snow.

Artificial snow mostly sucks.  Coupled with the weather, it's icy, not fluffy.  Granted, ski runs don't have the budgetary resources of a state run Olympic games, so perhaps there are higher end machines that make perfect snow

A friend of mine works with the Special Olympics. Countries like Russia, places in the Middle East, China, etc are huge donors to the Special Olympics, treating them like royalty.

Sort of like when John Oliver did that thing on the president of Turkmenistan and his obsession with paying the Guinness records people for useless records, a lot of authoritarian/human-rights-abusing countries give millions to the Special Olympics for the "good publicity".

At some point many years ago I remember a lot of talk about how stupid  figure skating was, because your score was based on judges who could be manipulated.

It's nice to see we've added a ton of new winter sports that generally only Americans are really good at in the winter games... And pretty much all of them are based on judgemental style points.

What I haven't been able to find is whether the "traditional temples" in the background (hilltop and island) were purpose-built for this venue.

That would be completely on-brand for the PRC.

Not especially picturesque...but if low impact is the goal of the IOC (har har), then reusing an abandoned industrial wastezone is about as good as you can get. not like anyone else wants the land...

They've been around long enough that other countries have caught on. Japan this year has some pretty awesome snowboarders, from what I saw in the half pipe. Then again, Shaun White is still freaking amazing.
