So I've added a tab to my schedule spreadsheet with the seeding possibilities for the Mixed Doubles Curling. It is the MxD Curling tab.

Here's what we know:

Italy is the #1 seed

No matter what happens, Great Britain and Norway are in.

Canada pretty much needs to win. There's only 1 extreme scenario where they get in with a loss, but it's about as likely as China becoming a free country tomorrow. That scenario is:
- SUI beats NOR + GBR beats USA + Canada somehow makes up an over 23cm deficit in the draw shot tiebreaker, which is the average distance of their draw shots to the button (to decide who gets the 1st end hammer) in each match not including their 2 worst shots. SWE finished at 21.77, NOR stands at 22.32, and CAN is at 45.90.

Correction: to show you how little I've been paying attention to figure skating; the original order for the Team Event had the men's free skate tonight. Instead, it's the pairs skating.

Love watching the Olympics.

Watching it now, in fact.

Some of the skaters have been phenomenal, yeah, including the Russian doll.  She was exquisite.

Yeah, it's win or they're done. But they're facing the unbeaten Italians, so that could be a tough task.

I'll have that match on my smart TV, skiing on my computer.

Do you all remember the Georgian Luger who tragically died in a training run in 2010?

He would have been the first Luge athlete from the country of Georgia.

In Beijing, his cousin brought his family name to the history books.

Yeah, there's pretty much zero expectations on them now. Their lack of success with the opening draws to determine first end last rock have put them at a disadvantage almost every match. I haven't seen all the matches but I don't know if they've won any of those draws.

It's a shame because they are both really talented, and their skill has let them pull out some unlikely comebacks, but they haven't had any time to develop a good working rhythm.

Not in a big way. I have seen them at World Championships and Olympics before, of course. I think they were all 4-man teams though.

2022-02-06 8:10:49 PM
Update to the tiebreakers: I mentioned the extremely unlikely way that Canada could get in to the semis with a loss. Well, you can forget it. Canada lost the draw to Italy and it wasn't even close. In fact, Canada has ended up dead last of the 10 teams in the draw shot according to the official report, pulled from the Olympics website.

Canada MUST win this match to advance.

We were talking about that the other day. I've had a look at the World Championships records since the Turin games, and in the last ten years, Italy has more often than not got one of the positions in the WC from their results in the European Championships.

Since mixed curling is relatively new, it's hard to judge trends. That's kind of similar to how Australia showed up on the scene unannounced.

It seems like in winter Olympic sports, even more than summer, you get used to f one to maybe three countries dominating an individual sport for generations
