'liberticidal'? Wtf?

If they want 100% freedom they'd move to Somalia. They want freedom to do what they want and still be able to tell everyone else what to do

"Liberticidal". Once you use that word as a writer I'm pretty done with your garbage.  This is not 'organic', it's astroturfing.  It's not patriotic, it's stupid and dangerous.  They exercise their liberty to not get vaxed?  They are choosing to abandon a.job that requires it.  That's their freedom.   They also have the freedom to GTFO and STFU.

A 0.2% death rate in America is 660,000 people. Drunk driving kills 10,000 people a year. Are these folks also saying let's get rid of DUI laws and make drinking and driving legal? Because of why? Freedom? All because of requiring a vaccine or face mask during a once-in-a-century global pandemic? Children are required to get vaccinated throughout their young years for illnesses with far fewer deaths so should we just say, "Oh, that's only a couple of thousand dead children a year. At least they don't have to get vaccinated"? I thought this ridiculousness was only in America and I don't know if I should be comforted or disgusted that it is a worldwide phenomenon too.

Technically he Europeans are better at this than Canadians.

The French truckers/train engineers/ farmers/ any kind of government workers have practically made it an annual tradition of protesting something.  Usually right around the end of summer break. The country usually grinds to a halt.  Many "protesters" get to extend their summer vacations.

These things are neither 'spontaneous' nor an enormous success (apart from successfully grifting millions of dollars for the leaders via crowdfunding).

This must be why no civilization ever gets to the point of wide space travel.

I think it's a shorter cycle than you're suggesting.  We take care of a big problem, but once the people who were adults when it happened have died, it slips from cultural memory.  Nobody thinks enough of it to teach the kids.  It's no longer 'real' to us if there aren't enough living people around who remember it.

Then we start wondering why we have all these weird rules and customs that cost us effort to keep up, and decide we'd like to put the effort somewhere else.  And we get a way with it for a time.  Then the problem comes back and we're caught flat-footed.  We're soft.  We've forgotten what it took to solve the problem the previous time it popped up.  Maybe it's still in the history books, but outside a tiny percentage of history students very few people have learned what needs to be known again.

Most people just want to live, indulge, and be left alone.  And they're a lot easier to rile up with emotion than logic, so when your problem requires a logical response which triggers an emotional reaction, you're going to have trouble.

What we really needed was strong competent leadership guiding everyone to act in the community's best interest - instead we've had a few generations of self-enriching sociopath hypocrites.  And the last two years are the result.

Freedom isn't the only thing whose price is eternal vigilance.  It is also the price of the collective wisdom of your people.

as posted before by other farkers: (paraphrased)

Hard times create great people.
Great people create good times
Good times create weak people
Weak people create hard times

People have lived with too much privilege for too long and have become spoiled children looking for fights and misdirecting their impotent rage at being soft and weak to do anything meaningful because heaven forbid the expend the effort to do anything meaningful

So they cosplay protest groups.

Astorix: People have lived with too much privilege for too long and have become spoiled children looking for fights and misdirecting their impotent rage at being soft and weak to do anything meaningful because heaven forbid the expend the effort to do anything meaningful

I have lived a fairly soft life.  I've had it easy, never had a challenge I didn't set for myself.  The last person in my family to be involved in war was a grandfather who died 30 years AFTER WWII.  And as far as I know he never actually saw combat (though he was probably at legitimate risk of it throughout his service).

I'm vaccinated, boosted, and wear a mask when appropriate so I don't help spread a virus that could severely hurt or even kill people who are compromised one way or another.

I have no urge to get in a pick-up and wave a Nazi flag around while screaming about my freedom to prolong a pandemic at any cost.

I think what I have is an education and a lack of immersion in a propaganda-filled environment.  And I think we need to make sure that becomes true for everyone.

Well, it actually isn't a 0.2% death rate.  It's 1.2%.  You don't compute lethality by taking deaths from a disease and dividing by the entire population, you divide them by the number of people who caught the disease.  So they are wrong in their "facts", as well as their interpretation of them.

So far it's come in at 6x the "death rate" they are pushing.  So instead of 1 in 500 it's 1 in 85.  Big farking difference.  And in any case, as you point out 1 in 500 is still horrifying.

To all the idiots out there: Get your god damn shots, wear a farking mask, and keep the hell away from me.

Fair point. Even the idea of saying "No worse than the flu" to justify being anti-vax shows how clueless people are. They just assume no matter what happens the remaining smart people will save them and make them better.

My wife goes NUTS over anti-vaxxers. Her sister has polio and still walks badly because of it. My wife got the shot in time.

Like the Jews in Nazi Germany -- we now all watch this incrementally building of a racist tribal cult looking for an excluding homogeneous center as a secure home.   Only this time, there is a lot of money betting on being able to manipulate the growth through hate and bigotry based on empirical evidence of the mid twentieth century and granular profiling tools from social  media.   That money is held by governments and legal systems corrupted by power.

A few anonymous billionaires and a small cadre of dedicated right wing activists. It's not organic or grassroots. These people couldn't organize a pool party without help. They are funded and organized by a small extremist network with a big agenda that latch on to any movement or idea they find useful to co-opt it and further their goals.

"Collective freedom" sounds like it doesn't exist, only because a "collective" is just a bunch of individuals.  Individual "freedom" which impinges on other individuals' freedom is known as "license". Liberty cannot survive an epidemic of license.

In that sense, maybe a plague every so often is a good thing. We've spent too long without evolutionary pressure selecting for intelligence. Maybe all this vaccine denialism is just Mother Nature culling the low end of the IQ pool.
