China didn't write the book on genocide, but it continues to contribute some of the most important chapters

They lost their moral rudder.

Somewhere, Cecil Rhodes and King Leopoldo are having tea and remarking, "Good try. You would've gotten away with it if it weren't for those meddling kids."

There are only two things I can't stand in this world: People who are intolerant of other people's cultures, and the Dutch

"Xinjiang is a lovely place with no genocide, say Dutch professors"

I actually LOL at that one. Ha!  It's almost like a headline from The Onion.

Hmmm... I should probably double check to make sure it's not a satire site.

Haha, as I am also in The Netherlands and active in the Asian Studies field and I actually know the guy who said that, as it is a small academic world.  He literally said it in exactly those words in an interview. He is a true believer, probably started studying Chinese in the early 70's out of maost ideology and has been spouting CCP propaganda ever since. Everyone in the field has been avoiding him like the plague but somehow he managed to keep employment.  Glad it has finally come out in the press.

So this is a much smaller-scale version of what Putin's doing with the RWNJ news outlets, huh?

They claim to have invented everything else. They probably did that eleven times and burned the scrolls detailing how they did it.

Most ancient versions of warfare would qualify as genocide in modern terms (standard practice in ancient times: kill all able men, sell boys, girls, women, and old men into slavery).

Since China is like, six thousand years old roughly, that's plenty of time to commit plenty of genocides and forget all about them.

To be fair, there are four cultures on Earth which all claim to have invented 100% of everything, whether it's true or not:  China, India, Egypt, and Greece.  Talk to jingoists from any of those countries, and they will assure you 100% of all human inventions came from their nation.

Seriously one of the funniest lines I've heard in a film, in one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

Those four do have some big early contributions.

Plus, gyros are delicious.

"Xinjiang is a lovely place with no genocide" is a specifically terrible declaration (and the Dutch university deserves the consequences), but it's also a suspiciously awkward statement which encourages questioning. You know someone is compromised when they describe an area as "free of atrocities."

Anyone: Regarding Xinjiang, what can you tell me about this part of the world?
Professor: Certainly no genocide going on there, that much is certain!
Anyone: Oh, I mean, the people, culture, political climate, exports ...
Professor: It's a lovely place with no genocide.
Anyone: Any famous sites or areas of historical significance?
Professor: None tainted by genocide, I can promise you!

Mr Peverelli told NOS that statements from staff members are not intended to deny what is happening in Xinjiang, but rather as an "attempt to engage in dialogue".

Go engage in diaglogue in China and see how long it takes you to end up in front of a firing squad.

It is the VU, the one in Amsterdam even.

They're known to be a haven of (psuedo-)communist, lost contact with reality left-wing nut jobs.

This does not surprise me in the least.

If you want to see crazy nutjobs on the left wing of the political spectrum, go to Amsterdam universities. The VU in particular.

Take their money and shill for them. It's not like it makes a difference either way.

"Xinjiang is just lovely," he said, according to NOS. "Lovely people, breathtaking nature, great food. And no forced labour, no genocide, or whatever other lies the Western media might come up with."

The way that sentence turns at the end... nearly gave me whiplash.
