A coworker's mom was diagnosed with breast cancer and instead of doing chemo or radiation, she went the "holistic" route. They had her on juice diets while walking hours at a time on a treadmill. Taking weird toxin-removing baths, etc. Even went so far as to sell off the family business and spend every penny she and her husband had to go to a wellness center in FL. She died within two years and left her husband completely broke. It was sad and stupid.

Only works if you start a group of NFTs that all look the same, but have some variations to them. You basically need a cult around them, and then you win the game.

That's not "holistic". Holistic just means you consider all the parts of the body when treating one.  Holistic = whole.  Not getting chemo and relying on juice diets (jesus, the blood sugar spikes!) isn't holistic at all.  It's just dumb.

Couldn't agree more.  You cannot properly parent so many kids.  It becomes an assembly line parenting style, which doesn't produce anything good.

I think  Alwysadydmr already grasps this, hence his use of quotation marks.  It is an effective but intentionally misused buzzword.  Misinformation will be most effective when it represents what someone secretly (or openly) wants to hear.  Not accidentally, that someone will too often be the sick, desperate, poor, etc

It's something that gets commonly sold as holistic therapy, though. Got a broken arm? You need a juice cleanse to boost your recovery. Strange rash on your chest? Aromatherapy will drive out the toxins. Frequent migraines? Put leeches on the soles of your feet to lessen your body's internal pressures.

"Holistic" sounds both official and mystical enough that it's a favorite term for snake oil sellers to abuse.

Herrrrrrrrr how original!  Alternative medicine DOES work.  Just because something isn't mainstream doesn't mean it isn't effective.  Acupuncture is considered "alternative" but it absolutely helps.  Not only has it helped me greatly, but it even worked wonders for my dog.

It's a cute phrase, but it's wrong-headed.

Hmmm... I didn't get that from the post (granted, it was about what the woman did and not so much about holistic medicine) but you may be right.  It is indeed a very misused word.

And that annoys me, because I will often recommend a treatment to someone who is suffering, but since these types of words are misunderstood and misused, the person DOESN'T want to hear them, so I get sh*t for mentioning them.  Then I end up having to explain what the words actually mean... but it doesn't help.  So the person ends up missing out on a perfectly legit and likely effective treatment all because they've been conditioned to be repulsed by words like "holistic," "naturopathic," etc.

I don't recommend things anymore.  I'm disabled so I have a lot of experience with what works, what doesn't, what's actually nonsense, etc.  But no one wants to hear it and I don't have the energy anymore.

I understand not wanting to do chemo. Depending on the type of cancer, it can be farily mild, or it can be straight up murderous.  It might be easier to just give up on life and I get it;   But what i can't understand is wanting to treat it, and thinking you have a better idea than both a doctor who has spent their life treating it, and a pharmacist who intimately knows the dangers and benefits of each med.

Yep, agreed.  I can absolutely dig someone deciding not to do chemo.  Usually they realize that that's choosing not to treat it.  The whole Steve Jobs thing still blows my mind.  He could have gotten real care.  I dunno man people are nuts.  I'm all about doing things as naturally as possible, and as easy on the body as it can be, but I also know that I'm not gonna heal anything with essential oils and juice cleanses.

Desperation and hope are powerful motivators. Chemo is a very hard process to go through and it isn't guaranteed to work. Sometimes the best it can offer is a slim chance of buying you a little more time.

A painless "natural" alternative that promises to totally cure you might sound too good to be true, but it's also hard to resist, especially when the official options may not have much comfort to offer.
