the coin could easily be rugpulled due to an unusual part of the smart contract that allowed its creators to lock people out of selling

Surprised it wasn't set up to use sold coin to send bottles of scotch to Bannon's house.

I hate these people.  Has the world gone completely batshiat?

Conservationist and wildlife photographer George Benjamin tweeted about his new project, "The NFT Conservation Fund". "Over the last decade I've seen first-hand the devastation that our Earth is currently enduring, oftentimes feeling completely helpless," he writes. The project involves minting NFTs of his wildlife photography on the notoriously high-emissions Ethereum blockchain, and then contributing a measly 15% of profits to... get more wildlife photographers to do the same. Good news, though-the paper on which the limited-edition prints will be printed is "Forest Stewardship Council-approved"!

Rug pulls are an acceptable part of crypto.  It's just expected that everyone will favorited! down $50 on some junk coin and maybe your lottery ticket hits it big, but probably it does nothing and maybe the coin was a scam and the creator runs off with your money.   Oh well.

Welcome to The Metaverse!

Steve Bannon needs to be elected to something like the head of the school board for The Hamptons (ie someplace too rich that should know better, but doesn't). Then we'd be able to watch in gory detail as he chooses between pandering to his electors and destroying them. Oh, the FOIA requests would be glorious.

They don't accrue or maintain value. It's a very simple and incredibly obvious grift. Here's how it works:

Step 1. You exchange real money or at least a more common crytocurrency for joke coin
Step 2. Now the guy you bought it from has your money
Step 3. There is no step 3

This coin even took it a step further and made it possible to prevent you from selling the coin you bought. I'm not certain how that helps the grift, as you having bought the coin really completes the portion that separates you from from your money, but I could see feeling a sort of perverse sense of power in getting people to do something that stupid.

Apart from my being a software developer and the obvious intersection there, I don't give a shiat about crypto.

That's interesting.  As a former software engineer (still in title) and now project manager, knowing about crypto makes me not care about it at all.  It makes me think it's a solution in search of a problem.

My interest in crypto comes from my interest in investing and my interest in the psychology of hype and scams.  I love a good conman story.

This is my third time seeing a "can't lose" investment from the tech bubble to house flipping.  I remember everyone telling me how jealous I would be when they were rich and I wasn't.  That's where the "trolling" comes in. It's fun to parody that mentality because it's so ridiculous.  You have to make fun of the guy who is smarter than everyone else.

So now we've transitioned to "Yeah, there was a tech bubble, but the TECHNOLOGY blah blah."  Yes, the technology remains, but it never justified why anyone should have paid outrageous prices for tech stocks.  I see the obvious parallel in crypto.  There's this idea that even if crypto goes down, it will be around forever, which is true, but it doesn't justify the price.  I read "They're taking Bitcoin in El Salvador now so that means it will go up."  Why would it go up?  The dollar is accepted everywhere.  If that's the value creation, why isn't the dollar worth more than Bitcoin?

But I'm stupid.  I'm jealous.  I don't understand.  I'm a geezer.  And so on.  This one guy got rich, so we're going to get rich.  WAGMI.  Trolling.

For this coin, I think there needs to be some real crypto stuff. If you want to be scammed by Steve Bannon without crypto, there are several avenues for that.

Another "coin", sure. I don't see why you need to actually do the crypto stuff if you can convince people you did. The point is to steal as much as possible as quickly as possible, and that doesn't need your shiat to actually work. This coin proves that you can sell people nothing that you than revoke their right to sell again. Why not just make the nothing completely non-functional? These are not smart people. They will buy it.

It isn't really inevitable. A coin could get regulated out of existence. A mysterious influx in coins could devalue one. Someone can use existing structure to hijack governance of a coin to do shenanigans.

What it comes down to is that governance of crypto is unstable unless you really have  enough influential people bought in ( bitcoin/etherium would get treated like Madoff if someone dares to screw over the wealthy owners).
