To be fair, it's not like they've done a lot lately. I mean, it's about time. Though, Toots and the Maytals lasted pretty much forever, the Bosstones just never had that rocksteady a relationship.

The Impression that I Get is still one of my favorite tunes, especially the very last few notes. How it just... fades is just crushing. It fits the meaning of the song.

I feel weird walking into a Hot Topic or Spencer's and seeing a bunch of band T shirts from the 90s like well, them, because they don't seem like the big enough band to hold anyone's attention nearly 30 years later

40 years is a good long run for any band.
And it's not like anyone's gonna land a vegas residency as a ska band i suspect.
So unless they wanna keep doing the smaller time shows and tons of traveling for gig'n, then you gotta call it quits at some point.

Only a few lifestyle die hards actually enjoy living life out a show van out into their 50s and beyond.
For the bulk, there comes a time that other interests will pull you in different directions.

Sounds about right.

I wonder when the next renaissance of brass in popular music will happen. 70s and 80s rock had plenty of horns. Then ska in the 90s. Don't see much of it around these days, though.

Saw them live once.  They opened for Flogging Molly.  They just busted on the stage dancing in suits and ties with brass instruments, how delightfully absurd!

They played a big festival show at Riverside (now six flags I think) in Agawam, MA where I got on stage.  That was the only time I ever got on stage at a big concert, I'll never forget it.

It seemed like I was crowdsurfing forever and then all of a sudden I saw this light blue carpet with tiny yellow stars and realized I made it.  Quick skank and launched myself off the stage.  One of my favorite concert memories.

Had to be the same tour I caught them on. Saw them in Detroit just as Flogging was starting to headline shows. When we got there, I think it was State Theater but maybe Clutch Cargos, found out that Flogging decided to bail on the show to play on Conan (cant blame them, before then and in years since have seen Flogging a bunch of times and met them twice in a bar). Bosstones put on one hell of a show. Some guy in the crowd was apparently talking shiat on behalf of someone else and immediately got called out by the band and turned on by the crowd. Just thought the dude was nuts to be calling out a band with that many members. Amazing show though.

As much respect as I can give to the Mighty Mighty Bosstones the follow-up to the "Impression That I Get" was a song called "Royal Oil". "Royal Oil" was not a good song and probably killed whatever buzz they had going.

Since many death metal bands use "Illegible" as their default name font, how can you tell?

Could have been the same tour.  I saw them at some smallish venue (can't for the life of me remember which one) in Pittsburgh in the early to mid 2000s.  I can't say I was the biggest fan of either band but it was a hell of a great show.

Some have said that there's a fourth wave of ska going on right now, but as far as I can tell, it's just The Interrupters and a couple of third wave bands that have either stuck around or reunited.

IIRC, they didn't really have a good follow up from that album to Impression... I haven't listened to it in years, Impression... was the clear standout track, maybe the only one ready for prime time.

I can agree that the follow up, a song about smoking heroin from tinfoil, was not going to launch them into higher heights.

I'm not sure they ever meant to have such attention in the first place.  They'd been waiting for the right time and place for decades and finally landed something good.  Had they been stuck on making huts all the time, I don't think it would have worked, and I'm pretty sure they were aware of the passing fad.

Setzer is great going all the way back to his Stray Cats days. His stuff is always fun and he's probably the best rockabilly guitarist around.

Boston's a funny city.  You won't find more college students per square mile, but it closes up at 2 AM.  We weather the loss of our sports teams like it's something we deserve, but when they finally are up we wonder out loud whether we've earned it.  And the Catholic Church has held sway in a way that can't be overstated while less than 20 miles away Salem it's ground zero for the modern Pagan movement.  We put so much belief in unrealistic things like the fact that a single chair is all that should ever be necessary to hold a public parking spot just because you dug it out.

Aerosmith hasn't had a real connection to the place in decades.  And "Boston" has been so detached for so long you could discover they were from Salt Lake City and it could easily track.

But the Bosstones were the shining argument that we could produce a band that was worth a damn.  They were cool before it was cool to do what they do, and they kept doing it well after it was cool to be doing what they do.  Locals don't speak of run ins with reverence of rock stars, it was just a guy that needed guitar strings, or wanted a burger or was taking the Green Line to Park Street.

Rest easy lads, you did us proud and you've earned your down time.

The really impressive part is that the fade wasn't done via the mixing board; the musicians softened their playing to create a natural fade.
