Had the opportunity to go through the Titanic museum in Belfast when I went through.  Highly recommend it if you're ever up that way.  Supposedly the one in Branson, MO is really good too but haven't been there yet so can't comment on it vs the Belfast one.

Jesus, enough with the shiatty Brit tabloids already! Seriously, who didn't know that the "Women and Children First" thing was real? And who didn't know that guy's pushed those same women and children aside to save their own asses?

I've known this for as long as I've known about the ship. I knew that it was a standard at the time, and that it was ignored. This is pretty common knowledge.

I sailed west across the Atlantic in April '96. Our captain came over the PA one day and said we were about a mile from where the wreckage is located. Like an idiot, I ran up to the bridge and started looking overboard.

I've been to both. I preferred the one in Belfast. The one in Branson isn't terrible, but it's more of a roadside attraction than it is an actual museum. It's not quite a tourist trap...but it's close.

/ but, that's Branson as a whole. Everything there is, more or less, a roadside attraction.

No mention of the Olympic and the Titanic being swapped so the Olympic could be sunk to recoup the insurance money lost when it struck another ship. Also, something about JP Morgan. I guess it must be true then.

/the RMS Olympic was a fine ship worthy of more attention than she gets

Myth:

The Titanic was an innocent victim of an accident.

Truth: The Titanic had a strong anti-ice bias and purposely rammed the iceberg.

The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax has a great Titanic exhibit as well.

It sucked like Independence Day, Transformers, and Avatar did.  Technically, visually, and special effects-wise they're all absolutely brilliant films.  Plot?  Let's just say my favorite moment in every single movie is that one scene where I had absolutely no idea what was going to happen next.

Far and away the best Titanic movie is still A Night to Remember. Well a few things turned out not to be accurate ,such as the ship going down whole, overall it's far more accurate and far more true emotionally than Cameron's crap

Women and children first was not real. In most wrecks, there simply is not time for such a policy. Plus, there weren't women trained to manage lifeboats and rescue survivors from the water. The policy has always been, get everyone the hell off without a panic, while making sure there are enough men in each lifeboat to row it the hell away from the sinking ship.

I've been to 2 versions of this touring exhibit (1 on Queen Mary, 1 in Vegas). Always amazing. My favorite piece is a perfume salesman's leather bag (recovered from the sea floor) that still has sample vials and you can still smell the perfume.

Even better than touching it, IMO

Let me laugh harder.

It's inaccurate to the extreme on every level- from sets to dialogue to events and even the menu and music and clothes. It was a technical marvel as far as model fx goes, but that's about it. Nevermind the "plot" that never focuses on any characters outside the ship itself.

While it is probably not likely that Murdoch committed suicide, it is generally accepted that there were gunshots at Collapsible lifeboat C. If anyone was shot, committed suicide, or if they were just warning shots will likely never be known.

It was about an hour too long, and I was no longer on Jack and Rose's side when they went back into the depths of the ship when they had already been topside. Also, a lot of the dialogue is awful, and based on bullshiat.

At least they got to bang in the back seat of a rare French car. Woowoowoo!

Let me laugh harder at your post.

A night to remember is still regarded as the most accurate film version of the story and for its time was not just a technical Marvel, but in how it consolidated characters to represent first second and third class so effectively was extraordinarily well done.

CSB:
So I was at blockbuster sometime in the late 90s.  They were transitioning to DVD and all their VHS tapes were on sale.  A big painted sign on the window said "ALL VHS MOVIES $5!"  I was in college and didn't have much money, so It seemed like a good deal to take advantage of.

I peruse the selection and pick up some popular movies I had never seen.  Some of them were 2 tape movies, like Pearl Harbor, Titanic, and Malcom X.

I get to the register and they start ringing me up.  The total ends up being significantly more then I had expected it to be.  I said, "Hey, I got 6 movies, shouldn't it be about $30 plus tax?" (it had rung up closer to $50).  The clerk explains that, actually, it's $5/tape.  I point to the sign in the window that says $5 per movie, and you can't make an argument that a single tape in a 2 tape movie is a movie, and not just part of a movie.  He said, sorry, it's $5 a tape.

I couldn't really afford the $50 and was kind of miffed about it, so I said "Fine, Sell me just the Just 1st tape of the 2 tape movies, thinking he would just give up and throw in the whole set, since who the hell would buy only the 2nd tape of a 2 tape movie, but he stood his ground and actually sold me the 1st tape of each set.

Anyway, I still don't know how Titanic ends.

TFA:"At our exhibition we have the real diamond necklace worn by Kate Winslet's character, Rose, in the film.
It belongs to Kate Philips who was just 19 years old when she boarded the ship.
Her lover, Henry Morley, was a wealthy 47-year-old man who was married.
The pair were fleeing Britain under a false name to set up a new life together in America.
Tragically, he perished that night, but Kate survived and the baby she conceived while at sea was born nine months later.
Cameron based Rose and Jack's love story in the movie on them.

That's...quite a bit of embellishment on Cameron's part.
