It was a good thing when President Reagan nominated the eminently qualified Sandra Day O'Connor to the SCOTUS in 1981, the first white woman. It will be a good thing when Biden nominates an eminently qualified black woman to the SCOTUS in 2022. Way past due for both, but a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

It's funny how I never hear "pick the most qualified" when someone being considered for a position is white.

It turned out that a ranking of "best" for such matters was rather subjective, and was often biased by sex, race, or pronoun.

I'm completely in favor of nominating a Black woman. It's long overdue. I'm not thrilled with the messaging, though. I'd rather see "I'm choosing the best person I can to the court", who ends up being a Black woman instead of "I'm choosing the best Black woman I can".

It's a minor gripe in the grand scheme of things, but it's pretty much the only gripe I have with it.

Why can't it be the best black woman available?

Out of 115 current or former justices, 107 have been the best "white guy" available.

Well, since Bush II was president, I saw white dudes go from Republican, to Independent. Then when jughead, TFG was squatting in the white house, a whole lot more white dudes became Democrats. They may be blue dogs, but if the sort of reaction I've witnessed over time is anecdotal to the effect that 'white dude liberals' may not be disappearing, I hope that helps - from an endangered species perspective.

I agree. I think it kind of diminishes it. "Out of this narrow criteria, this is the best one we could find!"

If Biden wanted to nominate the first black woman for the post (which is an admirable thing, don't get me wrong), he should have just done it and not said anything about it first.

For example, get the Reich wingers 'outraged' enough, and it gives Manchin and Sinema more of an excuse to be obstructionist twats about it, because the nominee isn't "bipartisan".

It's bullshiat.  We're not dealing with some mythical measure of qualifications like who can produce the most widgets per hour at the factory, we have a broad swath of qualified judges.  Biden's job is to nominate someone from that pool who's judicial philosophy is what he wants to see reflected in the court.

Because inclusion matters.

If you need to understand why it matters, think how upset you got just now when hearing that it wasn't going to be a white man and then try and imagine what it would be like if you never had someone who looked like you on the bench.

My point isn't that it shouldn't be a Black woman. It absolutely should be.

My point is that in presenting that choice to the public at large, there shouldn't be the added qualifier. They're qualified. Full stop. They're not just "qualified, as far as Black women go".

White guys are always presented as the best people (whether they are not not) without any added qualifier.

It was only ever an excuse for hiring a person from the group they wanted.

Two items are wrong with it:

1) There will be a number of people qualified for the job with only subjective matters separating them.

2) Having different outlooks represented on a body such as the Supreme Court is valuable in and of itself. So being a black woman would make them a better person for the job than an otherwise equally qualified white male.

For most of the time "best person for the job" by default started with the criteria "white" and "male".
If you didn't have those, by their definition you couldn't have been the "best person for the job".
