Sixty-two teams entered this year.  Each week, seven bouts, so fourteen teams.  Three episodes so far, so that's 42 teams that have competed.  Fourteen more tonight will make 56, leaving six untested.  Which six will be the last ones to get a bout?

As a reference / reminder, here's this season's competitors.  (Images are not to scale).

Tombstone vs Mammoth is going to be a blood bath. I really hope they brought a spare everything.

And yet, we've seen *Captain Shrederator*, of all bots, take down Tombstone.

... Which just means Ray Billings will be out for blood now.

After being late to the episode 1/3 threads (and one-time for the episode 2 thread that never materialized), maybe this one will be the episode I'm actually here for.

If you're looking for it in the future, it gets put up on /r/battlebots about a day in advance, I'm not sure what the original source is.

Oh, well, I'm not on Reddit.  But thanks for posting the fight card!

And I see we have 'second bouts' this week - Malice, Ribbot, Mammoth, Tombstone, Tantrum, MadCatter, and SawBlaze are on their second fights tonight.  I don't know why I was thinking everyone would go before anyone got a second match - I should know they do it this way.

So half the bots tonight have been blooded this season, and half are coming in fresh.

And we have two Rookie bots on the card - Blade and Riptide.  Both of which also have Rookie captains.

It seems like this season has added time to the walk-ins and intros that seems absolutely wasted and kind of awkward.

Cut 10-15 seconds from the walk-ins and intro to each fight and give me some behind the scenes footage instead (in the pits, build/design talks with the teams, whatever) and it'd be just about perfect.

1. Never point a robot toward the sun
2. Never give a robot gum.
3. Never club, swindle, or perforate a robot or put them in an old car and roll them off a cliff.

Find a bunch of discarded airplane black box cases.

Use the hardened alloy to make a shell to protect the guts

Use billet steel transmission output shafts for wheels.

Cover it in zany stickers and hope for the best.  Who needs weapons??

I'd be inveeeencible!

*sigh*  I keep trying to preview and proofread these comments, and I keep getting in a hurry and distracted by my day job, and I keep making a fool of myself.

No, Riptide is not on the fight card tonight.  But we do have three Rookie bots - Glitch, Blade, and Retrograde.  Each of which does indeed have a rookie captain.  I'll have to hit YouTube and check out Retrograde.

There was a team many years ago with a bot called 'Atomic Wedgie'.  Their armor was an alloy called 'Inconel', which if I recall correctly, is used as reentry heat shielding for nuclear warheads on ICBMs.  (It's also been used as the *recording medium* in black box recorders...)   Seems to be more heat and corrosion resistant than just plain tough, though, so that may be why we're seeing more teams turn to AR500 steel.

Also, DUCK! has gone the 'extreme durability with a lack of effective weapons' route.  I love Duck, but this strategy does not seem to be paying off for him.

Yep.  And Raptors.  Lots o' uses for that stuff.  But 'Armor' does not seem to be one of the leading ones.

If the high-powered flamethrowers keep showing up, though, some teams might want to look into it...  Wonder how expensive / heavy it is?  It's apparently hard to work.

Raptors actually aren't, from my understanding. Inconel is a brand name, Raptors are using SX300/SX500, which is Inconel-like but developed by their own in-house metallurgy team. Pretty impressive stuff, in any case.

Flamethrowers have really become a threat the past few seasons, before that I always viewed them as a joke. Bots are expensive enough to build as it is, but still, I'd love to see someone like Chomp come out and innovate with graphene aerogel flamethrower protection or something crazy.

Yeah, that's my bad - I misread the article.  I thought SX300/SX500 was another version of Inconel.

A graphene aerogel fire protection system sounds intriguing.  I'd like to see someone try that!

Episode one was for the records.  So many bots caught fire.  The amazing thing is that they were able to go 90-120 seconds while engulfed in flames.

The drivers I root against every time are Ray Billings and Donald Hutson.  I can't stand their personas.

Jackpot was built with a $4k budget last year. I'm not sure what they spent this year, but that is a hell of a lot of bot for the price.

Agreed.  They seem to be smart about what they're doing.

No. 2 - Ribbot vs. Overhaul.

Ribbon has a historical 54% Win Percentage, 20% for Overhaul (over 3 seasons).

Season 1 Ribbot was fun to watch, because you could count on that foam shell getting torn apart. They're fun to watch for a very different reason now.

Their first season, I should say. Not season 1.

fark, Blade is a sexy bot.

No. 3 - Skorpios vs. the rookie, Blade.

Skorpios has a 72% Win Percentage over four seasons.  Blade looks like a love child of HyperShock and Tombstone.

2022-01-27 8:36:51 PM
Good lord that hammer saw

Hammer saws are absolutely my favorite weapon. Big impacts that tear right through armor, with the ability to be surgical about it. What's not to like?

2022-01-27 8:44:35 PM
No. 4 - Mammoth vs. Tombstone

Mammoth - 54% wins over two seasons.
Tombstone - 74% wins over five seasons.

Mammoth's structure is ill-suited to defend against Tombstone's attacks.

2022-01-27 9:01:35 PM
Well, *THAT* was unexpected!!!

2022-01-27 9:01:45 PM
You know those knockouts, that are like, DOUBLE knockouts??

2022-01-27 9:07:12 PM
Until that last one, Mammoth was doing a better job of absorbing those hits than I expected.

2022-01-27 9:08:00 PM
No. 5 - Lucky vs. Tantrum

Tantrum - 57% wins over three seasons.
Lucky - 27% wins over three seasons.  Clearly, its name is more hopeful than descriptive.

2022-01-27 9:09:11 PM

ryebread: Until that last one, Mammoth was doing a better job of absorbing those hits than I expected.

If any of Mammoth's structure is left, it did better at taking those hits than I expected.

2022-01-27 9:13:25 PM
Don't make Tantrum angry - you wouldn't like it when it's angry!

2022-01-27 9:16:47 PM
Good sportsmanship on Lucky's part.  I always like to see that.

2022-01-27 9:21:54 PM
No. 6 - Ghost Raptor vs. the rookie, Glitch.

Ghost Raptor has a 45% win percentage over three seasons.  Could be interesting, but I think Ghost Raptor will take it.

2022-01-27 9:27:43 PM
Glitch is one handsome bot.

2022-01-27 9:29:42 PM
I'm not sure what I think about that front armor (not sure I want to call that a wedge...) on Glitch. It looks like that could make it hard to make contact with the weapon.

I appreciate Chuck Pinzer's desire to make Ghost Raptor into a contender, but engineering can only go so far when the design is flawed. He's obviously a skilled builder, at some point I hope he throws in the towel on this design, simplifies, and comes back stronger than ever.

Glitch has a big attack surface.  Lots of places you can do damage to it without risking its weapon.

I like the Omni-Wheels.
