(CNN)   Former NC Governor and current US Senate candidate Pat McCrory: Duke not offering me a cushy "professorship" after I left the governor's mansion is exactly the same level of injustice as blacks in the 1960s being refused service at lunch counters   (cnn.com) divider line

I suppose I can't technically call it a false equivalence, because that would require the two things to have at least one trait in common.

A very false equivalence? Some things are falser than others?

You don't understand. They denied him a position because some of the big-money donors disagreed with his politics. So they actually denied him a cushy teaching job because people were bigoted against his political views, which are expressed through his speech and writing. Speech and writing come from inside you -- they're initiated by your thoughts, your emotions, your very soul. All of that, of course, is contained within your skin. So to discriminate against someone for having a political thought is to discriminate not only against the top layer of their skin -- i.e., its color -- but against all of the deeper layers beneath it. It's not just normal epidermal racism, in other words, but racism against all of it: dermal, epidermal, venal, circulatory, you name. It's all mixed up in there, with his thoughts and his soul. This is true racism. It's racism against the entire person, their entire body, not just their outer skin. That's the point he's trying to make.

Could it be that Duke saw an issue with a person that lost his job for being a corrupt lying crony?

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he's actually making these assertions in good faith and really believes what he's saying rather than just stirring the pot. To someone like this, a system of beliefs is an immutable characteristic, as immutable as skin color. He has no awareness that his beliefs are something he has control over and are malleable, and most importantly, are the very essence of the content of his character. He damn well should be judged on his political beliefs. As should we all.

From wiki: "McCrory was active in the Student Government Association and was part of a conservative backlash to the growing "hippie" culture at Catawba in the mid-1970s"

Ya see, Larry? Do you see what happens?

So Duke sucks or blows?

Off-topic:  I want to follow up on the news about that local GOP group banning Maus.  It's always a good idea to read a banned book.  It's also good to remember that the banning of Maus could be for both the purposes of silencing Nazi criticism that hurts white feelings and also of furthering Holocaust Denial aims by removing stories of the Holocaust.

Ok, back to the Duke sucking or not thread.

Weird how the people who think MLK never said anything other than "judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character" constantly get upset when they're actually judged by the content of their character.

His response perfectly shows why he should not be taken seriously as a lecturer public policy:

"You know what I said to him, I said, 'If I come back to the, if I come back to the campus, will you serve me at the lunch counter?' And I meant it."

It seems to me that with this thinly veiled threat, Pat McCrory tells the world that he feels public policy is about using power to settle personal scores.

Racist white assholes are ALWAYS the victim.

It's why racism appeals to so many white people: I'M the victim here, not that black guy who was killed by police. A cop pulled me over the other day, I was only going 5 over the limit. Why aren't we talking about MY pain?

Etc. No matter the injustice, whatever racist white assholes have experienced is worse. It's like that acquaintance (or relative) who one-ups you in every farking conversation, no matter what it's about.

The Venn diagram of "things that mediocre, privileged, conservative, white males excel at" and "things that make someone an asshole" is a circle.

McCrory is forever associated with his idiotic HB2 bill that not only made the state a laughing stock, but it alienated both the large companies that form the bulk of the state's economy and the large sports teams that form the bulk of the state's culture and self-image.

"I was blacklisted by Duke University, I was -- every former governor of North Carolina was invited to work in the Public Policy School of Duke University, the Terry Sanford Public Policy School -- former governor," McCrory said. "And so I went and talked to them and they said, 'We'd love to have you help us out.'

A spokesperson for Duke University told CNN that it was inaccurate of McCrory to say that "every former governor of North Carolina was invited to work in the Public Policy School of Duke University" and declined to comment further.

Checking Wikipedia, Bev Perdue is the only ex-governor that has the Public Policy School of Duke University listed. I suppose it is possible that others were asked and declined, but Duke themselves denied the claim.

Also, I read the And so I went and talked to them line to indicate that he was not asked, and tried to invite himself in.

In the decision making, Duke might have evaluated Purdue's PhD from a large University differently from McCrory's bachelor's degree from a junior-high-school sized private religious college.

If Duke declined to hire a Nazi, that could also be considered refusing to offer a job to someone because of their political beliefs.

During his second term as Governor, he and a member of his state trooper bodyguard unit inadvertently stepped out in front of my car in downtown Raleigh, causing me to reflexively come to a stop.  I then realized who it was, but sadly, by that time, it was too late.

To this day?  I wish I'd have accelerated and run his stupid ass over.  There were lots of witnesses who saw him do it so I'd probably have skated, but even had I been convicted of vehicular homicide?  I'd be out by now.

I worked for Duke from 2016 to 2020 and believe me, ain't no one proud that those two bozos went there.  Same for Steven Farking Miller.  Ordinarily, when a school has some one in the White House, they talk it up.  No such effort as far as I noticed for that twat.  Didn't hurt that from what I understand, he was deeply hated by his classmates and even his family while at Duke.  Anyone happy that those 3 racist nitwits went there was in a silent minority.

Working there was pretty great actually.  Best place I've worked so far.  If I could've worked remotely for them from Illinois, I'd never have left.  All my family is here though, and we were by ourselves in NC when my wife had her stroke in 2019.  Duke Health saved her life, so they don't suck all the time!
