I told a friend I was having trouble keeping the economy rolling in Total War: Three Kingdoms.

"What are your taxes set to?"

"How do I set that?"

"Click the coin at the top of the screen then adjust the slider."

"Oh.... okay I'm good now."

I tried the 8 Princes DLC as Sima Yong since I had it already anyway. That's a way easier start for a beginner honestly IMO.

Compelling recommendations:
Local co-op survival:  Ark, hosting your own server for a household to play is immense fun
Logistics builder:  Factorio
Under-exposed single player fighter:  The Madmax game
Squad-based strategic game play:  XCom and XCom2

All three are highly tailorable with a robust modding community to match what you want to get out of them.

Bought a couple games this weekend.  GOG had Cyberpunk 2077 on sale at half price again, so I finally caved and pulled the trigger.  Haven't installed it yet though.  I know it had a rough launch and may still have a bunch of bugs, but what the hell.  I'm a big fan of Bethesda RPGs which are still partly broken to this day, so I think I can handle some bugginess in this one.

I also cleared another off my wish list, Amid Evil.  I really felt like a good ol' retro shooter, and it was on sale for a good price at GOG, so got that, too.  That one I did install and have been playing.  Damn, it's good.  All the things that made 90s FPSs great while making 2.5D pixel art look and feel modern with effects you wouldn't get in the 90s.  Gotta hand it to New Blood, they make some damn good stuff.

That also happens to be a game I'd heartily recommend, to address the headline's question.

Playing Shadow of War, the Lord of the Rings Shadow of Mordor sequel. It's got a few interesting things to it but good grief it looks very brown.

Beat Horizon Zero Dawn earlier this week in anticipation of the sequel out next month.  Hoping they fix a few things with traversal and distrust design. I played Arkham Knight and Spider-Man recently and they really spoil players for navigating those huge world maps. Word is that Forbidden West is pretty much just stealing traversal from Breath of the Wild now so hopefully that will be fixed at least.

Has anyone played War of Rights?  I've thought for years that a FPS, using muskets and such, would be awesome. After they added the 300 player support, it looks like this has been accomplished.  How is the player base (in attitude and quantity)?

I mostly played Rainbow 6: Extraction this week.  It a quite fun mashup of the Rainbow 6 engine and operators, L4D-like gameplay with a healthy X-com vibe.  Since its PvE, there isn't nearly as much toxicity as siege.  My biggest issue is finding a decent team for higher level missions.  They are not gated, and require a great deal more teamwork and stealth than the first two tiers.  Often one of your teammates has zero idea how to handle them, and you are then trying to rescue operators for the next mission...

I was a bit bored yesterday and my game making muse hit me.  I managed to crank out a pretty solid Missile Command clone in a couple hours.  I then thought up concept #16 for a commercially viable game, which I might work on this weekend.  The AI programming will be both challenging and interesting.

Games I wholeheartedly recommend: Hades was my Game of the Year, so that's a good start.  Getting off the beaten path, I really enjoy Beat Hazard 1/2 for chilling out.  Pony Island for a head trip.  Some Farkers turned me on to Frog Fractions last week, which was hilarious, free and fun.  And Broforce for platforming hilarity.

I'm looking to load Ark.  It looks like a blast.  I like solo play, is it ok for that?

I've enjoyed the hell out of Raft but seem to blaze through new update content rather quickly.  Ark looks like something that is fun and will take a while to level/craft up while still being enjoyable.

WoWS. Still. I'll quit one day.

Finished Arkham Origins (It was okay, I guess. I feel City had a better plot.) and started on Arkham Knight (Not a fan of the Batmobile, which is a weird thing to say. I really like the gliding through the city movement).

Played through Unpacking the past couple of days. Nice, calm game of putting things on shelves.

Suggestions:
Exploration:
Outer Wilds (W/ Echoes of the Eye DLC, but you can play the base game before grabbing it if you want) (Also, go in blind if you can)
Turn based Tactical:
XCOM w/ Enemy Within and XCOM2 w/ War of the Chosen. Both DLCs massively expand and improve the base game.
Co-Op Survival:
7 Days to Die
Valheim

For both (And Ark, above), if you can't run a server locally due to hardware constraints, you can rent a server for a reasonable fee.
Solo Survival:
Subnautica / Subnautica: Below Zero
Breathedge
Not quite as good as Subnautica, and the humor is a bit juvenile, but it's close.
Logistics/Factory Builder:
Factorio for the top down experience
Satisfactory for the first person experience (And you can build vertically)
First Person Shooter:
Doom 2016
Far Cry 3

Metroidvania:
Arkham Asylum / Arkham City
Star Wars: Fallen Order
(But I'm a Star Wars nerd, so...)
Don't know what to classify it as:
Hardspace: Shipbreaker (It's good now, but there's another progress reset when they hit release... At some point..)

Oh yah you can definitely play it solo and at this point there is a daunting amount of content for it beyond the base game/map.  By default the game scales a lot of the activities/grinding/combat down when in single player mode but you can further adjust pretty much anything even beyond that.  To give an example the wife and I would typically include a mod that provided an ever-full feeding trough for our bases because dealing with managing the various dinos' hunger value was not something we were interested in doing.  We still have to be aware of their food while travelling with some but it took away that tedium of filling up feeding troughs for the legions of dinos my wife would tame and bring home, or breed them for cooler looking ones.

I envy anyone managing to go into Arkham Knight blind these days. The Batmobile sucks and the Knight reveal is seen coming from a mile away, but the actual twist in that game is utter perfection. Such a brilliant examination of what motivates the Bat.

If you're playing on PC, I highly recommend using a controller to make the Batmobile segments more bearable.

Speaking of going in blind: I really think that fans need to stop taking about doing Outer Wilds "blind." It's a game with clunky controls, no sense of progression, and a very aggressive timer. You can give a hint or two about the game's themes and ideas. I can't because after roughly 6 hours I hadn't figured out a goddamn thing about anything at all and quit.

No joke: Cyberpunk 2077. On PC its an entirely different experience to the console dumpster fire especially if you can run all of its most demanding graphics options.

thecactusman17: If you're playing on PC, I highly recommend using a controller to make the Batmobile segments more bearable.

Have been using a controller. It's not that the segments are bad (At least, not the ones I've played so far). it's that they're tonally inconsistent with the rest of the Arkham series.

Those are... fair enough points. The controls take some getting used to, the timer can get irritating at times, and the sense of progression isn't strictly defined. But a lot of the game is about exploring and the joys of discovery, the "I managed to figure out how to do X. or how to get to Y, or what Z is" and talking about it runs the risk of spoiling that joy for someone else. A general tip, though, would be that if you get stuck somewhere. go explore elsewhere for a bit and maybe you'll figure out how to deal with whatever you were stuck on.

Cyberpunk is the 'new' punishing game, despite the apparently lackluster gameplay.  I got it for Christmas a year ago, and haven't touched it yet.  First I was waiting for a new video card, and am currently waiting for the new 'imminent' patch before diving in.

GTA V, RDR2 and The Witcher 3 also hit pretty hard at max settings.

Yeah, I didn't pay that for it. But RX 6800's were around $1.5k and I just couldn't quite make that leap atm. However, at some point in the future when I get a card higher than this, I might get a decent portion of my money back as it is an unusual card and someone doing a "white" build or an anime theme one would probably jump on it, so to speak.

Its also not 4K, 'only' 1440p.  Which would be a small upgrade.  Something like that will probably be where I land.

It's an unbudgeted purchase, or I would just save my pennies for a few months and go big.  I suppose I could live with the shadow on my monitor for a few months, or hook up my old, lower res spare in the meantime.

I see some people skimmed the posts, SOOOOOOO: It was an overpriced 6700XT, that's for sure. However, in the GN review, it turned out to be not a bad card. Plus, if things like this sell, it would encourage Yeston to do even more weird stuff and also establish a real presence in the N.A. market. Remember when people would hear the names PowerColor, Sapphire or Galax and think they were 3rd tier junk? Yeston is where they were a few years ago, just with an odd take on things. And, as I said, when time comes to resell it, someone will be in the market for a card like this, if only for the esthetics alone.

As for searching for stuff on Ali Express, I agree it can be a bit of a mine field trying to avoid some of the more cringe items for sale on there. I had one as it came with a PS2 Hyperneptunia game and you couldn't get the game new without it (it was a pack-in "bonus"). Never opened the game but I got more than my money back when I sold it on eBay a while later.

isamudyson: I see some people skimmed the posts, SOOOOOOO: It was an overpriced 6700XT, that's for sure.

I'm only teasing. :) It's a really beautifully done graphics card. I'm sure you'll have no trouble selling it later.

AgentKGB: BumpInTheNight: Just grabbed Untitled Goose Game on steam since its half price and has always looked like a charming experience, didn't realize the coop was local play though so now pondering around the idea of a 2nd controller.

May I make a suggestion?

I took this suggestion last summer.  Pretty great controller for the price.

Compelling, is it seamless like drop in replacement for an xbox 360 for button mapping?  That's one thing I've grown very little tolerance is teaching every game the buttons on my joysticks of years yonder and where the 360 controller I've got was great, everyone already knew each other.

I originally got one to try out and my wife and kids liked it so much I bought another.

I haven't had any problems, honestly. I've used it on a PC, on a Odroid N2 running EmuELEC, and on a Pi Zero 2 W running Recalbox.

I find you get around 10 hours of use on a full charge. If you want to charge it while you use it that's fine. If the battery is low you can connect it to your PC using the USB-C cable and it'll work as a wired controller (and charge).

Dammit, I hit Add Comment by mistake.

I've used it with a ton of Steam & Epic games without having to fiddle with any button configuration.

Hell, my 12 year old uses it to play Switch games on PC via Yuzu.

Those of you suspicious of Cyberpunk 2077 need to get going. It's a fantastic game, at least on PC. I can't vouch for the console experience.

When I play RPGs, I kind of dread finding a new village because I know I'll be mired down in dialog for the next 3 hours instead of slashing through bad guys. Let me guess, your husband went into the woods and never came back, the children are hungry, and you lost a ring somewhere yada yada yada.

Imagine my surprise that I'm really digging Disco Elysium which is nothing but that. But it's so well written that it holds my interest.

Do the M 1-4 buttons make any difference or are they just user assignable? I have a SteelSeries Stratus Duo that I managed to get from Best Buy right as they were starting "sales at the door" when lockdown began to ease a tad in 2020. Otherwise, I use one of these with my laptop:

I may spend on some PC/console things but controllers have never really been one of them. Having started gaming before the NES was on the scene, as a kid you got used to maybe not having the best joystick (might even stick from time to time) but you dealt with it. So, I just kept with getting something decent but not super high end. Seems to have worked out so far. We used to think this was the height of controller tech:
