Seems like the real Russian economy must be teetering on collapse if they are going to invade Ukraine as a distraction. Cutting them out of SWIFT gives them more ammunition to rouse rabble at home and blame all domestic hardships on the west. No real change can happen unless the oligarchs share in that hardship, IMHO, and fat chance of that.

They should not just stop with that, isolate them completely from the internet. Otherwise they are just going to (continue to) cyberattack.

Why are we waiting?  We know for a fact Russia hacked the 2016 elections.  We know for a fact, Russia has hacked the US many times before that and after that.  They are Literally attacking the US right now with hacks.  We should be cutting them off yesterday.  And Biden should announce a $5 million bounty (or whatever the best number is?  A billion?) On Putin.

"If Russia is disconnected from SWIFT, then we will not receive [foreign] currency, but buyers, European countries in the first place, will not receive our goods - oil, gas, metals and other important components," Nikolai Zhuravlev, vice speaker of Russia's upper house of parliament, said Tuesday, according to state media outlet TASS.

So some EU counties may experience petrol issues, but others won't get invaded by a hostile nation resulting in mass casualties.  Meanwhile, people in the US biatch about wearing a mask to protect their neighbors.

You have my vote.

We need the DNS servers to block all the Russian addresses.  I am going to learn how to do this on my piHole tonight.  And block the Chinese.  I font want filthy Russian packets going across my router.

I had a thought earlier that beyond just locking them out of the global banking system, they should also be locked out of other global memberships that depend on good behaviour. Removing their permanent membership on the UN Security Council should absolutely be on the table. It would destroy their national pride on top of their economy.

Agreed. The advantage of using banking as well is that no more payments to Republicans and the NRA.  Whoever they are paying in government to throw wrenches in our democracy is going to have a harder time getting their payments.

If their access to the international banking system is cut off - they won't be able to buy any fancy new yachts or outfit their personal paramilitaries.

Rich people get very pissed when you fark with their money - and they'll be pissed at Vlad.

Oh, I imagine they've got 6 months of operating cash in a London bank account.  But $10 million to buy a townhouse in Chelsea and $20 million to dig out 3 floors of basements and completely renovate it is another matter.

Could not possibly agree more. Cut Russia off from SWIFT and the internet and the Russians themselves will rise up and cut Putin's nuts off, or his suddenly "economically concerned" oligarchs will do it for them.

The Armenian radio was recently asked:

In finance, what is the difference between being a bull and a bear?

The answer was:

It's easy to explain. A bear is a pessimist, a bull and optimist.

Someone bearish on Russia, for example, thinks the ruble is bound for 100 to the US dollar.

Those who are bullish on Russia thinks it's bound for 100 to the euro.

Russia could try to business directly with China, bypassing western banking systems completely. The only problem is that China will insist in being paid with real money, not rubles because business is business.

I like it when he crafts ludicrous phrases such as "birthing canines" in the Steve Doocy thread.

Cyberattack is the term that would make some "sense", not hack. The misuse of the word hack is a common mistake.

How exactly will the EU then buy its gas and oil?

Slicing off Russia will create an energy crisis of absolutely enormous proportions across the EU and the UK (and the UK is already in a dire energy crisis).

I just recently used SWIFT for a transfer of funds to a colleague in China. Simple and swift.

Because SWIFT is run by Belgium or one of those small, do-nothing European countries.  We still have big influence but it is not up to us.

We can be sure that Russia's bought and paid for GOP will allow any of this to happen /s

Two things that would actually upset a conservative 1) the illicit money dries up 2) the kompromat of them sucking dog dicks and wide stancing in airports while crying that sex outside of marriage is bad being released.

Though I am sure GOP voters would understand the dog dick thing since they are all morally bankrupt pieces of human dogshiat.

Make it $500,000. Lots of money for the desperate proles, but not enough for the elite. Makes it harder for Vladdy to guess who's going after him.
