This is way old 'news' .

Martha has been against fake chemical 'truffle' oil for years.

Truffle fries have no truffle In or on them. It's that fake "truffle oil" crap that tastes like moldy gym shorts. They use flavoring chemicals to give it the musty flavor. You have not had any real truffles unless they were shaved at the table. Try the real thing once, the difference is amazing.

I have some olive oil infused with Italian Black Summer Truffles.  It works well in risottos, Spaghetti with oil and garlic, and eggs.  I wouldn't use a lot of it in anything but it does impart a nice bit of earthy unctuousness to dishes.

It was gifted to me.  After reading the article and some of the comments, I guess that person must hate me with the fire of a thousand suns.  Would I prefer a ruggedly handsome waiter, grating fresh truffle over my dish?  Certainly.  But some days you just have to work with what you got.

My wife doesn't shave her truffle, but she does keep it trimmed very neatly. Close enough?

I don't think that's what she's talking about.

For a decade or two, there have been companies selling 'truffle oil' that's basically artificial.  It's like if everyone labeled imitation vanilla as 'vanilla extract', and you had to know which was the real stuff and which was imitation.

There was a point when the price of truffles got crazy high, and some people started pointing out how the price of 'truffle oil' hadn't moved in step with it... which basically suggested that it's not made with truffles.

So you just can't trust the label, just like how you can't trust that 'extra virgin olive oil' is actually virgin, as the US doesn't have requirements on what that means.  And there are enough unscrupulous people out there who might just jack up the price on the crap stuff to try to sell it as the expensive stuff (like the guy who was reselling massive amounts of corn and wheat as 'organic')

Your stuff sounds like it's probably fine...  but you might be shocked if you find out what gets sold as 'truffle oil' or what it's going to cost you to replace the bottle with good stuff.

/still uses imitation vanilla
//but has real vanilla for when the flavor might actually come through.

'News' is the lazy catch-all tag for when it doesn't fit under any other tag because it's basically crap.

And I can say that, because I created the tag system

/there used to be a 'misc' tag for this back in the day
//back when all of the tags had a strong 's' sound
///up until that goddamned 'weird' tag.  But we already had 'strange', damnit

I'd be very careful with that, if the truffles are still in it.

any matter suspended in oil can make a body powerful ill.

Vodak, on the other hand...
"Earthy and intense, this takes the base vodka and infuses it with real Perigord truffles, thus providing a vodka with a true sense of umami. It's savory and bright with floral notes and a lush texture. One of the most complex vodkas we've ever added to our stable."

I like it. It's great on popcorn. As with anything else one needs to buy it from a trustworthy source. Evidently not the source Martha and what's his maniac use.

My argument was that 'weird' has a connotation of magical/paranormal.  And most of the stuff that was being posted was only strange

And there was a policy of not posting 3 of the same source or tag in a row... but then Drew did exactly that writhing a day or two of that new category.

And I had just finished redoing all of the tags, as some had been made on a mac, some on a windows machine, so the fonts didn't quite match... and then someone sent Drew a badly anti-aliased 'cool' tag that looked like 'CCCL' it was so badly done...right after I had added the 'spiffy' tag.

And then I tried to take myself off the fark admins mailing list, sent a pissy email, and Drew deleted my lowest numbered account (that had admin privileges).

/have since gotten a degree in information management
//and taken classes on classification theory and ontology design
///but still not sure where Michael Jackson falls on weird vs strange

If you're very very lucky there might be boletus  mushroom in it which is at least in the same kingdom. But by that standard sea anemones and cows are the same thing.
