Sure, criticizing Monsanto is exactly the same. And the end result was labeling GMO foods, not literal death from the unvaccinated.

[Young's anti-GMO rhetoric helped fuel a narrative that made it easy to spread fear and distrust about COVID vaccines, most of which used novel biotechnology methods and some of which use genetic engineering.]

I was at the taping session back in 2016(?) when he was a guest on Colbert's show. One of the crew met dressed as an ear of corn got into an argument with Young, then the ear of corn went offstage and someone shot one of those t-shirt cannons full of popcorn onto the stage.

Took a good 15 minutes to clean up the mess before the show could continue

GMO free is acceptable marketing

Plague rat propaganda is not

President Barack Obama signed the law in 2016 and, coincidentally, it went partially into effect just one day after the first case of COVID-19 was discovered in China: January 1, 2020.

I'm surprised Young and others didn't pull their music over that.

Monsanto sued farmers where they found evidence of seeds drifting over fencelines. Pfizer won't sue you if you develop some natural immunity to COVID. TFA fails thinks these two things are the same.

TFA is wrong.

I think the "seed blowing over fences" is a little far fetched. If you buy the seeds you buy the licensee for a year. And then you plant those seeds in rows at a specific time.

But sure they just blew over the fences.

No they aren't.  People are one dimensional cardboard cutouts on Fark.  And if you happen to be the Emmanuel Goldstein instead of the Big Brother to that crowd, expect Farkers to deny your humanity, and in fact lie about you, and conduct regular 2 Minute Hate sessions.  But if you are BB, your very feces are an untrammeled delight to that crowd.

Monsanto and other GMOs are literally and figuratively doing God's work. It started with Norman Borlaug and it prevents a malthusean nightmare.

As stated before by aussie as. my issue is with their business practices. If a seed gets out of place, you will get sued.

It's kind of like that, in that it's exactly like that.

Kind of the same - the fact is that there have been thousands of studies of these foods, none turning up evidence of a clear and present danger......and The National Academy of Sciences, the American Medical Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the World Health Organization, and the FDA  have all concluded that GMOs are safe to eat.

So is Neil spreading misinformation?

Monsanto is actually pretty awful.  No, they don't put microchips in food, but they have a terrible environmental protection record, they make pesticides with some of the most dangerous chemicals known to man and they harass small time farmers and make their lives difficult.
Maybe not the devil, but close to.
Article about this from reputable source
//Seriously, Roundup has chemicals that kill amphibians and cause cancer and they encourage people to spray it on the ground and around their home so it can enter the ground water and streams and ponds through run off.  They're basically selling consumers Agent Orange.  That's pretty evil.

THIS.

If Neil could get Kanye and Taylor Swift and a bunch of other big names to pull their songs then MAYBE they would think twice about this.  As deplorable as Joe's content can be, this is a pure business decision and it is a no brainer for Spotify.

2022-01-27 9:19:58 AM
If you don't eat GMO food, that's a decision that only affects you and maybe your kids. Also, regardless of how you feel about GMO food, Monsanto in particular has done some objectively shiatty things.

If you don't get vaccinated, your actions will cause people to get sick and possibly die.

Not the same thing.

2022-01-27 9:25:25 AM
He's still right about Rogan, and this article did nothing at all to actually address that point.

2022-01-27 9:26:20 AM
to be fair - I'm a big fan of Neil Young so I opened the article trying to keep an open mind about what the author was trying to say.

but yeah - that was just a giant pile of nonsensical horseshiat. take a look at the editor's note at the bottom:

FTFA(Editor's note: This column has been updated to correct the fact that Young uses insulin-rather than penicillin-for his diabetes, and to clarify a point about Vitamin A-infused golden rice.)

I really can't say if Neil's right about GMO's - I simply don't know enough about the science but at least he's made me aware of the issue. but if you try to write an article such as this trying to argue the science of GMO's and get a basic fact such as diabetics need to take insulin and not penicillin to manage their condition wrong, I pretty much know you're a fraud

/and I'm a little surprised on how this story blew up in the media the last few days and how all of the media outlets have been jumping on it. but how does that basic fact get past an editor at the Daily Beast? granted I know the Daily Beast doesn't have the editorial standards of the NYT or WaPo, but even for a crappy churn and burn "get the content out" article, getting something like that basic fact wrong is just inexcusable

2022-01-27 9:27:43 AM
Spotify won the streaming music wars because it knew the golden rule of consumerism: Convenience always wins.

Paying $10 a month to listen to whatever you can think of ad-free, then being able to put on a station of music culled from artists similar to who you already like makes CDs (and even piracy) look like a chore by comparison.
