I hate that, looking at the headline and subheadings, I can't be sure of which of the following this article is about:

- Democratic senators legitimately trying to assess prison conditions on behalf of inmates and being stonewalled by the prison employees

- Republican senators suddenly concerned about white terrorists' treatment in prisons and being assholes to prison employees

"Happily," in this case, it's the former.

Ugh, I didn't read the article before I posted. I need to get to bed.

They were assessing the prison condition on behalf of the correctional officers, not the inmates.  So you can go with a disappointing Option C.  COVID running rampant inside prisons is due to the correctional officers - the only ones that can leave and return - spreading it to the inmates because they aren't following precautions or vaccinating.

I think that's a bit of an unfair way to frame this. They're there to see the conditions, and while their immediate concern was the overworked guards (because they're there on behalf of a union), it's clear that they're also concerned about COVID conditions for everyone in the prison. Moreover, the story did point out that the senators were kept away from any areas that actually had inmates in them, so I don't think it's fair to suggest they don't care about them.

Anyone who wants to see the inside of a prison should become Governor of Illinois.
