Down with homeowners associations!

We're gonna need a bigger quote.

Oxford City Council wants to put the Shark House on the Heritage Asset Register for nebulous "preservation" reasons.

The owner is opposed to this for his own nebulous reasons.

Seems like a match made in heaven (or Headington, which is far from there) to me.

/CSB:  I used to live a few blocks away from the Shark.  Lots of tourists looking for the darn thing even though it's visible from the main road!

Why is there random placement of the word advertisement in multiple places in the article?

Was there a Sharknado nearby?

Since this is the Sun, I doubt the existence of both sharks and houses.

Subby is missing the point. Not being allowed to have the shark is the old fight, now the guy is afraid he won't be allowed to remove it.

His reasons aren't nebulous at all.  It was conceived and built as a protest to over-regulation and they want to turn it into a tourist attraction.  Yeah that would be pretty irksome

Better climb up on your roof and knock the shark down before it's too late, buddy.

Council says it has to go, don't know what's behind their fears

And before the flood of corrections arrives... yeah, I got it backwards. Duly noted.

Why would anyone do that?
For the halibut.

As a former loyal reader of the Fortean Times, I am pretty sure I saw this shark at least 20 years ago and perhaps as much as 30. The Sun dates the counsel feud to it's installation in 1986 and I definitely was buying the FT before Fark came into existence.

I remember the price of the FT magazine going up from about 1.5 GBP to $16 Canadian per issue before I decided not to buy it any more. I assume there is still a print edition but almost every magazine I ever loved is dead.

Anybody remember Sheperd's weird news column? Dave Barry? Cecil Adams? Dr. Science? The World Weekly News? Mind you, I am prone to like magazines with 50 to 60,000 subscribers, which makes The New Yorker look like a giant operation.

Mind you, I remember when MAD was 25 cents (CHEAP). More than my allowance and as much as two to five cheap old-fashioned reprinted comics like Little Lulu and Baby Huey.

Chris de ... Burgh?

One of my first year room mates' favourite musicians. Sailing takes me away became "Whaling ..." to the University Wits of my day. Twice UnPC.

A certain class of people loves it's ancestral, hereditary Dad Jokes.

The FT also has a photo of a salmon embedded in a roof. That one was a real fish and was probably dropped by an eagle with eyes bigger than its payload. Fish falls are the specialité de la maison FT.

It already is a tourist attraction, though.  Headington doesn't exactly have a lot of them.
