Schilling asked the Hall to remove him from this year's voting,

LOL - tired of being reminded how much people dislike you, Curt?

but he remained an option. He was named on 58.6% of ballots, down from 71.1% last year.

In other news, 58.6% of HOF voters don't think being a shiatheel should matter when being presented as the Best of Baseball.  In fairness, Ty Cobb is still in there, so...

That should not disqualify you from the hall of fame.  Being an asshole doesn't have any bearing on if you were amazing at the sport.  Neither does murdering someone, being racist, raping someone, betting on games, or any other thing you can think of.

For that matter, neither should steroids.  Steroids only give you the power to build bigger muscle.  They don't make it easier to hit a baseball.  Take away the homeruns and Barry Bonds still has a hall of fame career.  I don't care if he did or didn't use steroids.  I don't care that he's a massive asshole.  He's a hall of famer.

Curt I probably make the argument he's not a hall of famer regardless of that fact.

But Barry and Roger?  They're hall of famers.  Pete Rose too.

Absolute sham they're not in.

Schilling wasn't even the one that lost the most year-to-year votes. That would be Omar Vizquel...

Ty Cobb likely wasn't as big an asshole as people think. A lot of the stories about him were made up by a biographer to sell books.

Cap Anson, on the other hand...

They do help you overcome injuries more quickly.  So they were back on the field more often, accumulating more numbers.  How much those numbers were affected we can never really know but it made a difference.  And then there's all the subterfuge that went along with it because, as we know, they weren't supposed to be using those substances.

Bonds?  Yeah, he was already headed to the Hall before his neck disappeared.  Clemens?  Probably in already as well.  He's no Tom Seaver or Bob Gibson though.

betting on games

there is a bright-line rule posted in every MLB clubhouse that says if you bet on games in which you have a duty to perform you will be permanently ineligible. Pete Rose broke that rule.

As much as I can't stand Bonds (and Clemens is a raging asshole as well), he would have gone in even without steroids.  Punishing he and Clemens while others seem to have gotten a pass seems really arbitrary.

Steroids do not magically give you big muscles.  They give you the ability to repeat motions without pain.  You can do what you like.  You can build big muscle if that's your thing.  You can swing at a pitched ball for hours on end.  You can work on fast twitch muscles for hours on end.

In short, yes, yes they can improve your ability to hit a baseball.  Bat speed, strength, hand eye coordination, all can be improved with painless repetition.

One of those things PED's can do is to make you swing your bat faster.  When you swing a bat faster it allows you to swing the bat later.  When you swing a bat later you have more time to correctly identify the pitch type and location. So with PED's, you swing harder and more accurately.  Your average and slugging percentage go up - you'll definitely hit better, even if you're an uncoordinated tool, like Jose Canseco.

Add on the recovery factor (and a steady diet of greenies) and you hit more home runs than you would over the same time period if you were PED-free.

Well, what you say is true but it really doesn't help the eyesight much which is the most important thing needed for hitting.

But, frankly, if you kicked all the people out of the HOF who did speed, bet on games, where vicious racists and did steroids but never got caught you would have about 20 people left.

No problem with leaving Schilling out, he really isn't all that great in the end statistically, but Rose, Bonds and Clemens should have been in.  But I also think the whole idea of Halls of Fames is stupid anyway.

Schilling didn't get in because he's a stupid bigot (which is a dumb reason given that Steve Carlton is in).

Bonds and Clemens didn't get in because they did steroids (and weren't nice to the media like Papi) so they could be better at baseball.

Pete Rose (and Shoeless Joe) broke the one unbreakable rule and cheated to lose. Rose is also a statutory rapist, but that gets less play.

This was a known quality and he still was only 16 votes away last year.

What really tanked his votes this year was his 1/6 support.

Read my comments again.  I know all the reasons for all the folks you mention.  My point remains:  if you go back and look at virtually 75% of the inductees you will find all of the things you mentioned in various individuals, and in most cases all the things.  Shoeless Joe never threw the games he was accused of throwing, go check his stats for that WS.

And anyway, nobody who played before 1948 should be in anyway.

They're out there online. They're not particularly in depth nor do they discuss physiology.  You don't deserve them.

Plus I'd just rather just believe Jesus was the reason for all the miracles performed by St. Barry and Cardinal Mark and all those PED's were mere coincidence.

I agree about Rose.  Damn f*cking shame, that.

But I'm not sure about your assertion that only on-field performance should count.  There are all kinds of things that go into whether people think someone is deserving. If the HOF voters think off-field performance is important, then they can vote that way - unless the rules specifically say only to take on-field performance into account.  In which case, why have a vote?  Just have the computer crunch numbers.

But yeah, Schilling isn't good enough anyway.  Charlie Hustle should have been in there decades ago.

After watching all the shows today I still dont understand one thing.  Clemens never tested positive, there was no evidence, and he was found not guilty in a trial.  Why is everyone just ok with tossing him in with bonds and Ortiz that tested positive?  Was there more evidence of this somewhere?  Or just assumed?

Steroids don't make you better at baseball.

All those baseball players that appeared to be human/thoroughbred hybrids just really liked weightlifting and calisthenics so they they did what any normal person would do to pursue their passion.

If you think Brady Anderson needed PEDs to hit 50 homeruns I will fight you.

Bonds never tested positive either.  His came out of the Balco documents and it's pretty well laid out in Game of Shadows (along with some former big name US Track athletes)

With Clemens, if I recall correctly, it was a an interview with a clubhouse guy named Brian Mcnamee, saying he injected Clemens (and Knoblauch and Pettite).
There was also some proof of shipment like a label or something for shipments of steroids.  There was a follow up defamation suit.

Steroids are not magic dinger juice and you don't understand baseball if you think they are

There were 1300 more home runs hit in 2019 than in 2001. But lol steroid era right?

They're totally not doing them anymore.  PED's and masking agents all disappeared.

You need to see what these people are doing. They have labs in their mansions.  Pull a couple of pints of blood.  Analyze, add some "enrichment", grab the centrifuge, spin out the bad shiat, reinject the good sh*t, good as new, no detectables.  We're a generation away from secret cyborg conversion surgery.
